Patal Bhuvneshwar is a limestone cave temples dedicated to Hindu God and Goddess. It is located in the Kumaon Region of the Uttarakhand state near Gangolihat in Pithoragarh District. This cave is 160 meter long and 90 feet deep from entrance. It’s a narrow tunnel like small space from entrance to reach inside the cave. There are myths and mysteries about the Patal Bhuvneshwar cave which leads to spiritual vibes and ancient’s history of Hindu religion.

The information about this cave was found on Skanda Purana written earlier in 6 Century CE. Skanda Purana is named after the Son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Lord Kartikeyan. Lord Kartikeyan known as Skanda, Murugan and Subrahmanya. The Skanda Purana is written about Lord Shiva and its 81000 verses is an ode to Lord Shiva. In the Manas Khand of Skanda Purana the Patal Bhuvneshwar is described as “He who wants to feel the presence of eternal power should come to sacred Bhuvneshwar situated near the confluence of the rivers Ramganga, Sarayu and Gupt Ganga”.

Patal Bhuvneshwar also shows the passage of time. As per the Hindu mythology the cycle of time is divided into four Yugas (four parts) which are known as Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapar Yuga and Kali Yuga. It is believed that we are currently in Kali Yuga and once the Yuga will complete again Satya Yuga will start.

It is also said that in Patal Bhuvneshwar 330 Million Gods and Goddess worship Lord Shiva.

The Patal Bhuvneshwar Cave was first discovered by human in Treta Yuga by a king called Rituparna. As he entered in the Cave, he saw Adishesha the King of Nagas or Snakes. He took King Rituparna to inside the Cave and King Rituparna witnessed the different God and Goddess as well Lord Shiva himself.

After that the Cave was again lost in time but again discovered by Pandvas during the final trip to Swargarohini.

In the Kali Yuga the Cave was discovered by Adi Sankaracharya in 8th Century and from the it came into existence and people start to worship here.

Best Time to Visit:-

Though you can visit Patal Bhuvneshwar throughout the year because of its pleasant weather and nearby great attractions, but during monsoon sometimes it heavy rainfall and landslide in the Kumaon areas. So it better to avoid during the Monsoon from July to Sept month and after that you can visit any time the Holy cave.

How to Reach:-

By Air: – The Nearest Airport is Pantnagar Airport, which is located at a distance of 226 Km; from there you can take a bus or shared taxi to reach here.

By Train: – The nearest railway Station is Tanakpur Railway Station which is located at a distance of 154 Km. It is connected with major cities railway networks.

By Roads: – Patal Bhuvneshwar is well connected with roads transport and you can drive here from Delhi or other cities. To reach Patal Bhuvneshwar you can take a bus from Haldwani (198 Kms) and the nearest small city is Gangolihat which is located at a distance of 14 Kms.

Things to know Before Visiting the Patal Bhuvneshwar:-

  1. The cave is not accessible by wheelchair.
  2. The entrance to the cave temple is goes through the narrow tunnel which needs to slide through the 90 feet distance.
  3. Oxygen level is inside the cave is less so be prepared.
  4. Senior citizen and children’s below 5 years are not advised to enter in the cave.
  5. Footwear is not allowed inside the cave.
  6. Photography not allowed inside the cave as well while entering you need to submit you Mobile phones and cameras at entrance.
  7. Dress properly because of it’s a sacred place and make sure to maintain the decorum of the place.
