The Divine Legend of the Blue-Throated God

The Story Behind Neelkanth Mahadev

The temple's name "Neelkanth" literally translates to "blue throat," commemorating one of Hindu mythology's most dramatic episodes. During the cosmic event of Samudramanthan (churning of the ocean), when gods and demons churned the primordial ocean for the nectar of immortality, a deadly poison called Halahala emerged first.

This poison was so potent it threatened to destroy all creation. Lord Shiva, in his infinite compassion, consumed the entire poison to save the universe. His consort, Goddess Parvati, pressed his throat to prevent the poison from descending further, causing his throat to turn blue—hence earning him the name Neelkanth Mahadev.

Local legends say Lord Shiva meditated at this exact spot for 60,000 years to neutralize the poison's effects, sanctifying this location forever.
