Joshimath Town in winter

Joshimath (Jyotirmath) Travel Guide: Places to Visit and Trip Planning

Uttarakhand7 min readUpdated 22 October 2026

About Joshimath

If you are travelling to Badrinath, Auli or the Valley of Flowers, you will almost certainly pass through Joshimath. Most people treat it as a night halt and leave early next morning. That is a pity, because this small mountain town has some of the oldest religious sites in Garhwal, a beautiful river confluence just down the road, and a calm evening atmosphere once the day's traffic has passed.

Joshimath sits in Chamoli district on the road between Rishikesh and Badrinath. In 2023 the Uttarakhand government officially renamed it Jyotirmath, its traditional name, so you will see both names on signboards, hotel listings and bus boards. This guide explains what to see, how to reach, where to stay and how to fit Joshimath sensibly into a bigger trip.

Why Joshimath matters to pilgrims

Adi Shankaracharya established four cardinal maths (monastic seats) across India, and Jyotirmath is the northern one. The others are at Sringeri, Dwarka and Puri. For many pilgrims, praying here completes the spiritual picture of a Badrinath yatra.

Joshimath also becomes important in winter. When the Badrinath temple closes for the season, the gaddi (seat) of Adi Shankaracharya is brought down to Narsingh Temple in Joshimath, while the idols of Uddhav ji and Kuber ji stay at Pandukeshwar. For 2026, the temple committee announced on Vijayadashami that Badrinath will close on 16 November at 9:37 pm, so winter worship at Joshimath and Pandukeshwar begins soon after. Dates change every year, so always check the announcement for your travel year.

Places to visit in Joshimath

Narsingh Temple

This is the town's best-known temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Narasimha form. Pilgrims believe a visit here is part of a complete Badrinath darshan. The temple is in the town itself, so it fits easily into an evening or early morning. Leave your footwear at the stand, follow the priests' instructions and ask before taking photographs inside.

Jyotirmath and the Kalpavriksha

The Jyotirmath complex is linked with Adi Shankaracharya. Near it stands a very old mulberry tree known as the Kalpavriksha, which devotees believe is where Shankaracharya meditated and gained enlightenment. Whatever your beliefs, it is a peaceful spot. Remember this is a working religious institution, so keep your voice low and visit only the areas open to the public.

Vasudev Temple and old town lanes

The Vasudev Temple is another old shrine in the town. Walking between the temples through the older lanes gives you a sense of everyday mountain life: small sweet shops, woollen stalls and people heading for evening aarti. Ask your hotel which paths are fine to use at the time of your stay.

Vishnuprayag

A short drive towards Badrinath brings you to Vishnuprayag, where the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers meet. It is the first of the five sacred confluences (Panch Prayag) on the Alaknanda. View it from a safe, designated point and keep well away from the water; the current here is fast and cold. Our Panch Prayag route guide explains how it connects with the other four.

Local walks and evening views

After a long day on the road, sometimes the best "sightseeing" is a slow walk, a hot meal and the mountains turning pink at sunset. Keep at least a couple of hours unplanned.

Is Joshimath safe to visit?

This is the question many travellers ask. In January 2023, land subsidence caused cracks in many houses and roads in parts of Joshimath, and some areas were declared unsafe. Hotels and homestays in the affected wards were closed, and the Joshimath–Auli ropeway was stopped because one of its towers stood in an affected area.

Since then, the town has continued to function as the main base on the Badrinath and Auli routes, and pilgrims and tourists pass through every season. Our practical advice:

  • Book accommodation that is operating legally and is outside any area marked unsafe by the administration. Ask the property directly.
  • Follow district advisories and road updates before you travel.
  • Do not enter cordoned or damaged buildings for photographs.

Excursions from Joshimath that need their own time

Many websites list everything within 50 km as "places near Joshimath". In the mountains, that can mean hours of driving. Plan these separately:

PlaceHow it fitsKey planning point
AuliA day trip or a stay of its ownRoad access is the dependable option; check ropeway status
Badrinath and ManaOnward pilgrimageMatch dates with the temple's opening season
Govindghat, Valley of Flowers, Hemkund SahibDedicated trek of several daysNeeds walking stages and overnight stops
Tapovan and the Niti valley roadOptional scenic driveCheck road conditions and any area restrictions

Joshimath to Auli: ropeway or road?

The Joshimath–Auli ropeway was suspended in January 2023 after the land subsidence, and it has not been a reliable option since. A replacement project has been discussed, but do not build your trip around a cable car ride unless operation has been confirmed for your dates. The road to Auli is the dependable way up. In heavy snow even this road can close for a while, so keep a buffer day in winter. See our Auli destination guide and Auli ropeway status guide for details.

How to reach Joshimath

By road: From Haridwar or Rishikesh, the road follows the Ganga and then the Alaknanda through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Chamoli. It is a long mountain drive, and roadworks, landslides and traffic can change the timing a lot, so plan to arrive in daylight with proper meal breaks. Many families prefer to split the journey with a night at Srinagar, Rudraprayag or Karnaprayag.

By air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. From there you continue by road.

By train: Haridwar and Rishikesh (Yog Nagari Rishikesh) are the practical railheads.

When booking a cab, give your exact pickup point. A pickup from Jolly Grant Airport and one from a Haridwar hotel are different routes and are priced differently.

Best time to visit Joshimath

Choose your month based on why you are going:

  • For Badrinath: travel within the temple's open season, generally late April or May to November.
  • For Auli scenery and treks: spring and early summer bring clear views and green meadows; autumn after the monsoon gives crisp mountain views.
  • For snow: winter is the time, but snowfall is never guaranteed and roads can be blocked for a day or two.
  • Monsoon (July–September): landslides and road closures are common on this highway. Travel only with flexible dates.

Even in summer, mornings and nights are cool. Pack a warm layer in every season.

A practical two-night plan

Day 1 – Arrive: Drive from Haridwar or your previous night stop and check in. If you arrive early enough, visit Narsingh Temple for evening darshan.

Day 2 – Explore: Morning visit to Jyotirmath and the Kalpavriksha. Then either drive up to Auli for the day or take it slow with Vishnuprayag and a walk in town.

Day 3 – Move on: Continue to Badrinath, Govindghat or your next booked stop, or begin your return journey.

Where to stay in Joshimath

You will find simple guesthouses, homestays and mid-range hotels. Choose by access as much as by view. Before paying, ask:

  • Can a vehicle reach the door, or are there steps with luggage?
  • Is there heating and reliable hot water?
  • Are meals available at the property in the evening?
  • Is the building outside any area marked unsafe?

Families travelling with elderly parents should confirm these details directly rather than relying on a hotel's star category.

Food and practical tips

Try simple Garhwali food where available: mandua roti, aloo ke gutke, kafuli and jhangora kheer. Withdraw cash in Joshimath if you are heading to Auli or Mana, as card machines and ATMs further up can be unreliable. Mobile coverage is generally available in town but may drop on the highway.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Joshimath and Jyotirmath the same place?

Yes. Jyotirmath is the traditional and now official name; Joshimath is the name most people still use.

Is Joshimath the same as Auli?

No. Joshimath is the town in the valley; Auli is the ski slope and meadow area above it. You can stay in either, but plan transfers based on where you will actually sleep.

Can I visit Joshimath without going to Badrinath?

Yes. A temple visit with an Auli day makes a good short trip on its own, subject to road conditions.

How many days are enough for Joshimath?

One night works as a halt. Two nights let you see the temples properly and add Auli without rushing.
