Ukhimath Travel Guide: Omkareshwar Temple and Winter Pilgrimage

Uttarakhand6 min readUpdated 22 October 2026

About Ukhimath

Every year after Diwali, when snow begins to close in on Kedarnath, a decorated palanquin carrying the festival idol of Lord Kedarnath begins a journey down the mountain. Its destination is Ukhimath, a quiet temple town in Rudraprayag district. For the next six months, Kedarnath's worship continues here at the Omkareshwar Temple.

That makes Ukhimath one of the most meaningful places for a winter pilgrimage in Uttarakhand. It is also a lovely base for the Chopta region, Deoria Tal and Tungnath. This guide explains the winter darshan, how to reach, where to stay and how to combine Ukhimath with nearby places without overloading your trip.

Why Ukhimath is special

Winter seat of Lord Kedarnath

The Kedarnath temple sits high in the mountains and closes every winter. After the closing ceremony, the Panchmukhi Utsav Doli of Lord Kedarnath is carried down over a few days and installed at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. Daily worship continues here until the doli returns to Kedarnath for the spring opening. The opening date for Kedarnath is itself announced at Omkareshwar Temple on Mahashivratri.

For the 2026 season, Kedarnath closes on Bhai Dooj, 11 November, and Madmaheshwar, the second of the Panch Kedar, closes on 16 November. Madmaheshwar's winter worship also takes place at Ukhimath. Exact dates change every year and are announced on Vijayadashami, so check before you plan.

Legends of Ukhimath

The town is linked with the story of Usha, daughter of the demon king Banasura, and her marriage to Aniruddha, grandson of Lord Krishna. Devotees believe the name Ukhimath comes from Usha. Shrines associated with Usha, Aniruddha, Mandhata and Lord Shiva are found within the Omkareshwar complex. These are articles of faith and add depth to a visit.

Omkareshwar Temple

This is the heart of Ukhimath. The stone temple complex is calm for most of the year and becomes busier in winter, especially around the doli's arrival and on important festivals. Allow enough time for darshan and aarti rather than squeezing it between two long drives.

Simple etiquette helps: dress modestly, remove footwear at the stand, follow the priests' instructions and ask before taking photographs. If a particular puja or ceremony matters to you, confirm the timing with the temple office in advance.

Ukhimath vs Kedarnath: what is the difference?

This is important for families comparing trips:

  • Kedarnath (summer): the high-altitude temple, reached by a long trek, pony, palki or helicopter, open roughly from late April/May to November.
  • Ukhimath (winter): a temple town reached by road, where Kedarnath's worship continues during winter. There is no long trek involved.

A winter visit to Ukhimath is a genuine pilgrimage in its own right, but it is not a visit to the Kedarnath temple building. Make sure your tour clearly says which one you are booking. Our winter Char Dham guide explains all four winter seats.

How to reach Ukhimath

By road: From Haridwar or Rishikesh, the route follows Devprayag, Srinagar and Rudraprayag, then turns up the Mandakini valley towards Kund. From Kund, a short climb brings you to Ukhimath. Guptkashi sits on the opposite side of the valley.

By air: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, is the nearest commercial airport.

By train: Rishikesh and Haridwar are the practical railheads.

It is a long mountain day from Haridwar. Many travellers prefer an early start, with lunch at Srinagar or Rudraprayag, and an arrival in daylight. If you use public transport, confirm buses and shared jeeps locally, as timings change. For a private cab, share your exact pickup point and stops. Our Rudraprayag guide gives more context on the region.

Combining Ukhimath with nearby places

Chopta

Chopta, a meadow-and-forest area higher up, is often called the "mini Switzerland" of Uttarakhand. It is a common add-on, but it is higher and colder than Ukhimath, and in heavy winter snow the road can close. Keep a separate night for it. See our Chopta guide.

Deoria Tal

Deoria Tal is a lake with reflections of the Chaukhamba peaks on clear days. It is reached by a walk from Sari village, not by car. Read our Deoria Tal trek guide to judge whether it suits your group.

Tungnath and Chandrashila

Tungnath is the highest of the Panch Kedar temples, reached by a trek from Chopta, with Chandrashila summit above it. Tungnath has its own winter closing and a separate winter seat at Makkumath. Check trail and temple status before you commit. Our Tungnath–Chandrashila guide has details.

Guptkashi and Kalimath

Guptkashi, across the valley, has the Vishwanath Temple and Ardhanarishwar shrine. Kalimath, an important Shakti temple, is also in the area. Both can be added on a relaxed day.

Suggested itineraries

Two nights, temple-focused:

  • Day 1: Drive from Haridwar, check in, light evening.
  • Day 2: Unhurried darshan at Omkareshwar Temple; optional visit to Guptkashi.
  • Day 3: Return or continue to your next stop.

Three to four nights, temple plus mountains:

  • Add a night in the Chopta area or a morning walk to Deoria Tal, depending on season and fitness.

For a structured trip, see our Panch Kedar tour and Auli–Chopta package.

Best time to visit Ukhimath

  • November to April (winter worship): the main season for Kedarnath winter darshan. Days are clear and crisp; nights are cold. Snow can fall in Ukhimath itself occasionally and more often above in Chopta.
  • May to June: pleasant weather, good for combining with Chopta and treks, though Kedarnath's worship has moved back up the mountain.
  • July to September: heavy rain and landslides on Mandakini valley roads. Travel only with buffer days.
  • October: clear post-monsoon skies, a good time before the winter shift.

Snow should never be promised. If seeing snow is important, ask about current conditions a few days before departure.

Where to stay

Ukhimath has guesthouses, homestays and small hotels; Guptkashi across the valley has more choice. Some travellers stay in Sari village for Deoria Tal or near Chopta for the meadows. Before booking, check:

  • Exact location and road access (a listing "near Chopta" may be far from Ukhimath)
  • Steps between parking and room
  • Hot water, heating and blankets in winter
  • Evening meals

Practical tips

  • Pack thermals, a warm jacket, cap and gloves for winter trips.
  • Carry some cash; ATMs exist in the area but may be unreliable.
  • Mobile networks work in town but can drop on the roads above.
  • Start driving early in winter; days are short and mountain roads are best done in daylight.
