About Yamunotri
Yamunotri is the origin of the holy Yamuna River, and one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. It is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, believed to be the daughter of Surya Dev (Sun God) and sister of Yama (God of Death).
The Yamunotri Temple is perched at an altitude of 3,293 meters, surrounded by rugged peaks, glaciers, and thermal springs, offering both spiritual peace and raw natural beauty.
Religious Significance
The present temple was built in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur. The deity is a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna. Pilgrims offer prayers here before visiting the actual source of Yamuna River — the Yamunotri Glacier, located a few kilometers uphill.
One of the main rituals is cooking rice in Surya Kund, a natural hot spring, and offering it to the deity as prasad.
