Gangotri Yamunotri Do Dham Yatra 2027 – 5 Days from Haridwar

Yamunotri and Gangotri are the first two shrines of the Char Dham circuit: the source of the Yamuna and the seat of Goddess Ganga on the Bhagirathi. This 4-night, 5-day yatra from Haridwar covers both in a single trip, with a night at Barkot before the Yamunotri trek and two nights around Uttarkashi for Gangotri. Yamunotri needs a 6 km walk each way from Janki Chatti; Gangotri is reached by road, so the yatra suits families who want the Himalayan shrines without the long Kedarnath trek. The 2027 opening dates have not been announced; both temples traditionally open on Akshaya Tritiya, and we confirm each departure after the committees announce the date.

Route and travel times

Janki Chatti to Gangotri is about 230 km by road. Distances differ a little between maps, and the Bhagirathi road is slower than the numbers suggest because of narrow stretches and repair work.

The Yamunotri trek

Motorable road ends at Janki Chatti. The path to the temple is about 6 km one way and climbs steadily, with tea and water stops. Pony, palki and doli services are paid for locally; rates change each season and our earlier guidance was roughly ₹2,500–₹8,000 per person. Wear shoes with grip, carry a raincoat and be off the trail by dark. The Gangotri leg

The drive to Gangotri follows the Bhagirathi gorge through Bhatwari and Gangnani. It is a long day, but the road is motorable all the way to the temple. Dates and registration for 2027

The 2027 opening dates of Yamunotri and Gangotri have not been announced. Both temples traditionally open on Akshaya Tritiya, around 8–9 May 2027, and the temple committees confirm the exact time closer to the date. For reference, both opened on 19 April in 2026; Gangotri closes on 10 November 2026 at 12:05 PM (Annakut) and Yamunotri on 11 November at 10:28 AM (Bhai Dooj). In winter, Goddess Yamuna is worshipped at Kharsali and Goddess Ganga at Mukhba.

Monsoon and road conditions

July and August bring heavy rain, and landslides can close sections of the Barkot–Uttarkashi and Gangotri roads for hours or days. If you travel in the monsoon, keep one or two spare days, check the weather and road status each evening and expect itinerary changes for safety. September and October are usually calmer, and the roads are clearer in May and June, though busier.

Travel tips

• Rest a day in Haridwar before you start if you are travelling from far.
• Carry thermals, woollens, gloves, a cap, a raincoat and trekking shoes.
• Carry motion-sickness tablets and a few lemons for the hill drives.
• Carry medicines, a first-aid kit, ID and a copy of your registration letter.
• Keep a power bank; mobile signal is weak in places.
• Emergency numbers: 104 (medical), 108 (ambulance) and 1364 (Tourist Care).
