Dehradun is Uttarakhand's winter capital and largest city, and the gateway of the Doon Valley, sitting between the Shivalik hills and the first ridges of the Himalaya. For many travellers it is simply the place where the flight lands before the drive to Mussoorie or Rishikesh. But Dehradun deserves more than that. It has colonial-era institutions, Tibetan monasteries, forest streams, famous bakeries, and a relaxed pace that makes it a comfortable city break.
This guide helps you decide how long to stay, which part of the city suits you, how to handle airport and station transfers, and how to connect Dehradun with the rest of Uttarakhand. If you just want a sightseeing route, see our separate Dehradun sightseeing itinerary.
Dehradun at a glance
| Planning point | What to know |
|---|---|
| Location | Doon Valley, Dehradun district, Uttarakhand |
| Known for | Forest Research Institute, monasteries, schools and academies, bakeries, gateway to Mussoorie |
| Airport | Jolly Grant Airport, outside the city on the Rishikesh side |
| Railway | Dehradun railway station, near the city centre |
| Ideal stay | 1–2 nights for the city; longer if combined with Mussoorie or Rishikesh |
| Nearby | Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Chakrata, Dhanaulti |
City vs district: avoid this common mistake
Dehradun district is much bigger than Dehradun city. Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Chakrata are all in the district and often appear in "places to visit in Dehradun" lists. But each is a separate trip with its own drive and, ideally, its own night. Decide first what you want:
- A city stay in Dehradun itself
- One night in Dehradun before heading into the hills
- Dehradun as the arrival point for a longer Uttarakhand holiday

How many days should you spend in Dehradun?
| Time available | A practical plan |
|---|---|
| A few hours after arrival | Check in, have a meal and pick one nearby place |
| One full day | One sightseeing circuit, not criss-crossing the city |
| Two days | A heritage and culture day plus a nature day |
| Three days or more | Add Mussoorie, Rishikesh or Chakrata with their own stay |
Traffic in Dehradun can be heavy in the evenings and on weekends. Plan fewer places, done properly.
What to see in Dehradun
Dehradun's highlights fall into a few groups:
- Heritage and learning: the grand Forest Research Institute and its museums.
- Faith: Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, Mindrolling Monastery with its tall stupa, and the Buddha Temple in Clement Town.
- Nature: Robber's Cave (Guchhupani), Sahastradhara's springs and streams, and the Malsi Deer Park area.
- City life: Paltan Bazaar, the Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) and Rajpur Road's cafés.
Our Dehradun sightseeing itinerary groups these into easy one-day and two-day plans.
Where to stay in Dehradun
The right area depends on how you will use the city.
Central Dehradun (near the station and Clock Tower)
Good if you arrive by train, want to walk to markets, or need a budget stay. The downside is congestion: narrow lanes can make vehicle pickups awkward, so ask about parking.
Rajpur Road and the northern side
Popular with travellers who want cafés, restaurants and quieter hotels. It is also on the way up to Mussoorie, which helps if that is your next stop. Compare the exact address with your plan, as Rajpur Road is long.
Near the Sahastradhara Road / IT Park side
Useful if your plans focus on Sahastradhara and the eastern side of the city, with newer hotels in some pockets.
Near Jolly Grant Airport
Jolly Grant Airport is well outside the city, closer to Rishikesh. If you land late at night or fly out early, staying near the airport can save stress. It is also a sensible base if you are heading straight to Rishikesh or the Char Dham route rather than into Dehradun city.
Before you book, check
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact address and parking | Avoids difficult pickups in narrow lanes |
| Lift and room access | Important for elderly travellers and heavy luggage |
| Check-in and check-out times | Matters with early trains and late flights |
| Breakfast timing | Helps with early departures |
| Cancellation terms | Useful when Dehradun is one part of a bigger trip |
How to reach Dehradun
By air: Jolly Grant Airport has direct flights from Delhi and several other cities. Plan airport transfers separately from city sightseeing, because the airport is a good drive from central Dehradun.
By train: Dehradun station receives trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Howrah, Varanasi and other cities. Overnight trains are popular with families.
By road: Dehradun is well connected to Delhi, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoorie. Buses run from the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT).
From Haridwar: Our Haridwar to Dehradun taxi service covers city drops, airport transfers and sightseeing. Tell us which one you need, because they are priced differently.
Best time to visit Dehradun
- March to June: pleasant spring and warm summer days. Do outdoor visits in the morning.
- July to September (monsoon): the valley turns lush, but heavy rain can close Robber's Cave and other water spots. Keep indoor alternatives ready.
- October to November: clear skies and comfortable weather; one of the best times.
- December to February: cool days and cold mornings and nights. Carry warm layers. Dehradun city itself does not normally get snow; for snow, you need to head higher, such as to Mussoorie or Dhanaulti, and even there it is not guaranteed.
Food to try in Dehradun
Dehradun is famous for its bakeries, especially rusks, cookies and cakes from old family-run shops. Basmati rice from the Doon Valley has long been well known. Rajpur Road has plenty of cafés, and Paltan Bazaar is good for street snacks. Many restaurants also serve Garhwali dishes; try them if you get the chance.
Combining Dehradun with other places
Mussoorie: The classic pairing. The drive up is short in distance but slow in traffic, so do not combine a full Dehradun day and a full Mussoorie day into one. See our Mussoorie guide.
Rishikesh: Close to Jolly Grant Airport. Decide whether you want spiritual activities, sightseeing or adventure. Our Rishikesh guide helps you choose.
Chakrata: A quieter hill area further away. Plan it as its own trip. See our Chakrata guide.
Char Dham and Garhwal: Many pilgrims fly into Dehradun and start the yatra from there. Allow a rest night if you arrive late.
