Places You'll Visit on This Tour
Auli
Auli sits at around 2,500–3,050 m in Chamoli district and is India's best-known ski destination. In winter its long, open slopes turn white, and on clear days you can see Nanda Devi, India's second-highest peak. Even if you don't ski, the snow, the meadows and the views make it the highlight of the trip.
Chopta
Chopta is a small meadow at about 2,600 m, surrounded by oak, deodar and rhododendron forests. It is the base for the Tungnath and Chandrashila trek, and its quiet campsites and wide views have earned it the nickname "Mini Switzerland of India".
Mussoorie
The "Queen of the Hills" sits at about 2,000 m above Dehradun. Colonial-era buildings, Mall Road, cafés, viewpoints and waterfalls make it perfect for a relaxed end to a mountain trip – and one of the most popular places in Uttarakhand to ring in the New Year.
Dehradun
The capital of Uttarakhand and your drop point. It has the nearest airport (Jolly Grant) and good train connections to Delhi and other cities.
Devprayag
The first and most important of the Panch Prayag. Here the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda join to form the Ganga, and the old Raghunath Temple overlooks the meeting point.
Rudraprayag
The confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, named after Lord Shiva in his Rudra form. It is also the gateway to Kedarnath and the Chopta region.
Dhari Devi Temple
Located on the Alaknanda between Srinagar and Rudraprayag, Dhari Devi is believed to protect the Char Dham shrines. Most travellers on this route stop here for darshan.
Best Time for an Auli Chopta Mussoorie Trip
The trip runs well in two windows: December to February for snow, and April to June or October to November for clear trails and open roads.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (snow season) | December – February | Snowfall in Auli and Chopta, skiing season, cold days (−5°C to 10°C in Auli). Best for snow and New Year trips. Some roads may close after heavy snow. |
| Spring & summer | March – June | Pleasant weather (10°C to 25°C), green meadows, rhododendrons in bloom, Tungnath temple open from late April/May. |
| Monsoon | July – September | Lush green but landslide risk on mountain roads. Not ideal for this route. |
| Autumn | October – November | Clear skies and the sharpest Himalayan views. Cold nights, first snow possible by late November. |
Auli Chopta Mussoorie in New Year
New Year is the most popular time to do this trip. Auli usually has snow by late December, Chopta looks magical under white cover, and Mussoorie's Mall Road comes alive on 31 December. Because demand peaks, hotels and cabs sell out early – we recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance.
Important Things to Know Before You Go
- Auli ropeway: The Joshimath–Auli ropeway has been shut since the 2023 land subsidence, and a new ropeway is still being planned. We take you up to Auli by road. If the ropeway or chair lift is running on your dates, you can buy tickets on the spot.
- Snow and road closures: Heavy snowfall can block the Joshimath–Auli road and the last stretch to Chopta for a day or two. Your driver may need to stop at the nearest open point, and you may walk the rest on snow.
- Tungnath temple timings: The temple is open roughly from late April/May to early November. In winter the deity moves to Makkumath, but snow walks on the trail are still possible with a guide.
- Long drive days: Day 1 and Day 4 involve 8–10 hours on hill roads. Start early, carry snacks, and take motion-sickness tablets if needed.
- Fitness: The Gorson Bugyal and Tungnath walks are easy to moderate. Anyone in average health can do them at their own pace. Senior citizens can skip the treks and enjoy the views.
- Altitude: Chandrashila is around 4,000 m. Walk slowly, drink water and tell us if you feel a headache or breathlessness.
- Mobile network: Jio and Airtel work in Joshimath and Mussoorie. Signal is weak or absent around Chopta.
- ATMs: Carry enough cash. ATMs are available in Joshimath, Rudraprayag and Mussoorie, but not in Chopta or Auli.
- ID proof: Keep an Aadhaar card or other photo ID handy for hotel check-ins.
What to pack
- Heavy jacket, thermals, woollen cap, gloves and socks
- Waterproof trekking shoes with good grip
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm (snow glare is strong)
- Power bank, torch and basic medicines
- Reusable water bottle and dry snacks
