Kainchi Dham Nainital

Kainchi Dham is the ashram of the saint Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji), in a narrow green valley on the Nainital–Almora road in Kumaon, Uttarakhand. It is about 17 km from Nainital, 9 km from Bhowali and 38 km from Kathgodam railway station. Built around a Hanuman temple consecrated on 15 June 1964, it has become one of the most visited spiritual places in north India. The ashram received about 24 lakh visitors in the first six months of 2026 alone, and weekends now regularly bring 20,000 to 50,000 devotees.

Because of these crowds, the administration is planning new rules, including online registration and a daily limit. This guide covers the latest rules, timings, how to reach, parking and shuttles, the June 15 mela, Neem Karoli Baba's story, where to stay and how to plan a calm darshan.

Neemkaroli Babaji

Latest update (15 October 2026): after about 36,000 devotees came on 2 October and more than 50,000 over one weekend, officials have proposed mandatory online registration with a cap of about 20,000–25,000 devotees a day. It is not in force yet. Until it starts, you can visit without registration. We will update this page when the system goes live.

What's new at Kainchi Dham in 2026

Kainchi Dham's popularity has grown very fast. The ashram used to see about 8 lakh visitors a year. That rose to about 24 lakh in 2024, and the first half of 2026 alone crossed 24 lakh. The 2026 devotional film Hanuman Ansh, based on Neem Karoli Baba's life, has brought even more first-time visitors.

Kainchi Dham Temple Gate

The road through Kainchi is the main highway from Bhowali to Almora, Ranikhet, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, and there is very little space between the hill and the river. So the Kumaon administration is working on a permanent crowd plan. Here is what has been proposed or ordered as of October 2026:

MeasureStatus (15 Oct 2026)
Online pre-registration, like the Char Dham yatraProposed; to be sent to the state government; would take about a month to build after approval and be tried first on weekends
Daily limit of about 20,000–25,000 devoteesProposed
Hotel booking checks for visitorsUnder discussion
Separate entry and exit, one-way movement insideOrdered
Rate lists at hotels, shops and eateriesBeing made mandatory
Action against picnics on the Shipra riverbankOrdered, with the forest department
Action against bikes rented out as taxisOrdered
Shuttle buses from Bhowali on crowded daysPlanned when crowds exceed limits
Ratighat bypass (18 km) to take Almora traffic away from KainchiAbout 8 km surfaced; rest awaiting funds
Opening at 4 am instead of 6 amUnder discussion with the temple committee

What this means for you: book your hotel before you travel, aim for a weekday, and check for a registration link before you leave home.

Who was Neem Karoli Baba?

Neem Karoli Baba, lovingly called Maharaj-ji or Baba, was a Hindu saint and a great devotee of Lord Hanuman. Devotees see him as a form of Hanuman ji himself.

  • Birth: around 1900 as Lakshmi Narayan Sharma, in Akbarpur village, Firozabad district, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Early life: he was married young, but left home to live as a wandering sadhu. He later returned to his family for some years at his father's request, while continuing his spiritual life.
  • Name: he became known as Neeb Karori (Neem Karoli) Baba after the place in Uttar Pradesh where he lived and meditated as a young sadhu.
  • Teachings: simple and loving. He asked people to "love everyone, serve everyone, remember God, and tell the truth". He was known for wrapping himself in a plain blanket, for feeding everyone who came, and for stories of his miracles told by devotees.
  • Temples: more than 100 temples and ashrams were built in his name, many of them Hanuman temples.
  • Samadhi: he left his body on 11 September 1973 in Vrindavan. His samadhi is at his Vrindavan ashram.

How Neem Karoli Baba became known worldwide

In 1967 the American psychologist Richard Alpert met Maharaj-ji, who named him Ram Dass. Ram Dass's book Be Here Now made Neem Karoli Baba known to millions of people around the world. Other Western devotees included the singer Krishna Das and Dr. Larry Brilliant, who later co-founded the Seva Foundation, a health charity.

Apple founder Steve Jobs came to Kainchi in 1974, a few months after Maharaj-ji's samadhi. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg visited in 2008, and cricketer Virat Kohli with Anushka Sharma came in November 2022. For most visitors, though, Kainchi is simply a place to pray, sit quietly and feel at peace.

History of Kainchi Dham

  • 1962: Neem Karoli Baba and a local devotee, Poornanand ji, chose a forested spot beside the Shipra river, where saints such as Sombari Baba had earlier meditated. A small platform was built here.
  • 15 June 1964: the Hanuman murti was consecrated and the ashram began. This date is celebrated every year as Pratishtha Diwas, the foundation day.
  • Over the next decade: shrines of Lakshmi Narayan, Vindhyavasini Devi, Mata Parvati, Ganesh ji, Kartikeya and a Shivling were added.

The name Kainchi means "scissors" in Hindi. It comes from the two sharp, scissor-like hairpin bends on the road at this spot.

What to see inside the ashram

  • Hanuman temple: the main shrine. Most devotees offer prayers and recite the Hanuman Chalisa here.
  • Other shrines: Shri Ram–Sita, Lakshmi Narayan, Vindhyavasini Devi, Lord Shiva and others.
  • Maharaj-ji's room (kutir): kept as it was, with his blanket and belongings. Devotees bow here in silence.
  • The Shipra river: the small stream beside the ashram. It is part of the sacred setting, not a picnic spot.

The ashram is small, and on busy days you move along in a queue. With separate entry and exit now ordered, the route inside may be one-way.

Darshan timings

The ashram opens at 6 am. It usually closes in the early evening: commonly published times are about 7 to 7:30 pm in summer and about 6 pm in winter. Aarti times also change by season, and timings are changed on 15 June and festival days. A 4 am opening is being discussed but has not been decided. Confirm on the day at the gate or with your hotel.

The nearest airport is Pantnagar, about 70 km away, with limited flights. Many people fly to Delhi and take the train.

UTC and private buses run from Delhi's Anand Vihar ISBT to Haldwani and Bhowali. From Bhowali, shared jeeps and taxis go to Kainchi. On crowded days, shuttle services run from Bhowali.

Parking and shuttle services

Kainchi sits in a narrow gorge, with the hill on one side and the river on the other. Parking near the ashram is very limited.

  • Normal weekdays: you can usually drive close to the ashram and use the parking areas along the road. Arrive early.
  • Weekends and holidays: expect police to stop vehicles at parking areas in Bhowali and nearby, with shuttles to the ashram. Traffic can back up for kilometres.
  • Two-wheelers: the administration is acting against bikes rented out as taxis. Use registered taxis.

During the June mela

For the foundation day, private vehicles are not allowed up to the ashram. In 2026, the traffic plan ran from 13 to 16 June:

  • From Haldwani and Kathgodam: park at Bhimtal parking or Vikas Bhawan parking.
  • From Nainital and Ramnagar: park at Metropole parking or DSA Flats parking in Nainital.
  • Special shuttles also ran from Haldwani bus stand, Haldwani railway station and Kathgodam railway station.

In 2025, shuttle fares fixed by the administration were about ₹150 by bus or ₹200 by Max from Haldwani, ₹100 from Bhimtal and ₹50 from Bhowali. Fares and parking points can change every year, so check the Nainital Police advisory.

Kainchi Dham Mela: 15 June foundation day

Every 15 June, the ashram celebrates its foundation day with a huge bhandara. Devotees queue from the night before for malpua prasad, which Maharaj-ji loved.

  • Crowds: lakhs of devotees. In 2025, over 5 lakh were expected.
  • Prasad: in 2025 malpua was given for three days (15 to 17 June) instead of one, and also at Bhumiadhar, Hanumangarhi (Nainital) and Suyalbari temples.
  • Traffic: the Bhowali–Kainchi road is closed to regular traffic, with diversions via Ramgarh, Nathuwakhan and Khutani–Dhanachuli.
  • Hotels: Nainital, Bhowali and Bhimtal are fully booked weeks ahead.

If you want a calm visit, avoid 13 to 17 June.

Your darshan, step by step

  1. Reach early, ideally by 7 am on a weekday.
  2. Park at the allowed parking or take the shuttle.
  3. Leave footwear at the shoe stand and keep phones on silent.
  4. Join the queue. On busy days, darshan can take 1 to 3 hours or more.
  5. Pray at the Hanuman temple, then the other shrines, and bow at Maharaj-ji's kutir.
  6. Receive prasad and sit quietly for a few minutes if space allows.
  7. Exit by the marked exit route.

On a quiet weekday morning, the whole visit takes 30 to 60 minutes.

  • Dress modestly: no shorts or sleeveless tops.
  • No photos, videos or reels inside the ashram.
  • Keep silence in the temples and at Maharaj-ji's kutir.
  • Do not picnic or bathe in the Shipra river; the administration is taking action.
