Munsiyari is a remote mountain town in Pithoragarh district, at about 2,200 m, facing the five snow peaks of Panchachuli across the Gori Ganga valley. Locals call it "Little Kashmir". It is the base for the Khaliya Top trek and the gateway to the Milam, Ralam and Namik glacier treks. It is far, about 280 km from Kathgodam, but its views are among the best in Kumaon.

Why visit Munsiyari
- Panchachuli peaks: five peaks (the tallest about 6,900 m) that, according to legend, were the five chulhas (stoves) of the Pandavas on their last journey.
- Khaliya Top: one of the best short Himalayan treks in Uttarakhand, with views of Panchachuli, Nanda Devi and the Rajrambha range.
- Culture: home of the Shauka (Bhotia) community, once traders with Tibet, with woollen weaving and a small tribal museum.
- Snow in winter and rhododendrons in spring.

Places to visit in Munsiyari
1. Khaliya Top
A high meadow at about 3,500 m. The trek starts at Balanti Band, about 8 km before Munsiyari, and is around 7 to 8 km one way through rhododendron and oak forest. It takes a full day (6 to 8 hours return). In winter the meadow is under snow and the walk becomes a snow trek; take a local guide. There is a KMVN hut and camping options midway for those who want an overnight trek.
2. Birthi Falls
A tall waterfall about 35 km before Munsiyari, right beside the road. Best after the monsoon (September–October). There is a KMVN rest house and a small cafe.
3. Nanda Devi Temple
About 3 km from town on a hilltop, with fine views of Panchachuli and the valley. Good for sunrise.
4. Tribal Heritage Museum
A small private museum run by local historian Dr. S.S. Pangtey, with artefacts, clothes, tools and photos of the Bhotia (Shauka) people and their old trade with Tibet.
5. Maheshwari Kund and Thamri Kund
Small high lakes reachable by short treks; Thamri Kund sits in a forest clearing about 7 km away. Best in spring and autumn.
6. Darkot village
A weaving village near Munsiyari, known for hand-made woollen shawls, pankhis and carpets. A good place to buy directly from local artisans.
7. Kalamuni Top
A pass at about 2,700 m on the road from Thal, with a temple and the first big view of Panchachuli. Stop here on your way in.

How to reach Munsiyari
By train
Kathgodam is the nearest major railway station (about 280 km). Tanakpur is another option (about 270 km via Pithoragarh).
By air
Pantnagar airport is about 300 km away. Pithoragarh's Naini Saini airport has had limited flights; check current schedules.
By road: two main routes
- Kathgodam → Almora → Bageshwar → Chaukori/Thal → Birthi → Munsiyari: about 280 km. Most people break the journey at Chaukori or Bageshwar.
- Tanakpur → Pithoragarh → Thal → Munsiyari: about 270 km.
The last stretch after Thal is a narrow mountain road with sharp bends. Drive only in daylight.

Snowfall in Munsiyari: usually between late December and February, sometimes heavy. After big snowfalls the road near Kalamuni can close for a day or two.

- Fill fuel at Thal or Bageshwar.
- Keep warm clothes even in summer; nights are cold.
