Rishikesh Adventure Activities: Plan Rafting, Camping and a Group Trip

Rishikesh is best known as the yoga capital of the world, but just upstream of the ashrams the Ganga turns into one of India's favourite adventure playgrounds. Rafting through white-water rapids, sleeping in riverside camps at Shivpuri, jumping off a bungee platform above a forested gorge, flying across the valley on a zipline: all of it is within an hour of the town.

The challenge is planning it well. Each activity has its own location, operator, timing and rules. A cheap "adventure combo" can turn out to exclude transport, or cover a much shorter rafting stretch than you expected. This page explains your options and what to check so that your trip is fun, safe and clearly priced. Send us your plan, and our Haridwar team will put together a trip with every inclusion written down.

Rishikesh adventure activities at a glance

Availability depends on the season, river conditions and the operator. A package that mentions "adventure activities" does not automatically include everything in this table.

River rafting in Rishikesh

Rafting is the headline activity. Trips run on different stretches of the Ganga above Rishikesh, and the stretch you choose decides how long you are on the water and how many rapids you meet. Shorter stretches near town suit beginners and families; longer ones from further upstream suit groups who want a bigger day out. You will hear rapid names like "The Wall", "Roller Coaster" and "Golf Course" from your guide.

Before you book, ask the operator:

  • Exactly where the trip starts and ends
  • How much time you will spend on the water, and the total time including transfers and briefing
  • What safety equipment is provided (life jacket, helmet, paddle) and who the guides are
  • What the age and health requirements are
  • What happens if rafting is cancelled due to river levels

Uttarakhand Tourism describes the rafting season as running broadly from September to June. During the monsoon, rafting is usually stopped because of high water. This is a general guide, not a daily guarantee; the final call depends on official instructions and river conditions on the day.

Not knowing how to swim does not always stop you from rafting, as everyone wears a life jacket and listens to a safety briefing. But each operator sets its own rules, so be honest about any health condition during their screening.

Camping in Shivpuri and around

Riverside camping is what turns a day trip into a holiday. Most camps are around Shivpuri and nearby areas, a short drive above Rishikesh. Evenings usually mean a bonfire, music, games and dinner under the stars, depending on the camp and local rules.

"Camp" can mean very different things, so check:

  • Is it a tent, a Swiss tent, a cottage or a room?
  • Are bathrooms attached or shared?
  • Which meals are included?
  • How far is the camp from the rafting start point?
  • Are a bonfire, music or a pool actually available and permitted on your dates?

A riverside location does not always mean you are allowed to enter the river. Follow camp rules strictly; the Ganga here is cold and fast.

Read our Shivpuri camping guide for more on choosing a camp.

Bungee jumping, giant swing and flying fox

Rishikesh is one of the best-known places in India for bungee jumping, with fixed platforms over a gorge in the Mohan Chatti area. The same sites usually offer a giant swing and flying fox.

These activities have strict rules on age, weight and health, and the operator decides who can take part. Confirm the venue, your slot time, transfers, and whether photos or video cost extra. Also confirm the refund or reschedule policy if weather stops the activity or a participant is not cleared.

Zipline, kayaking and other experiences

Ziplines in the Rishikesh area offer a gentler thrill and suit families. Kayaking and cliff jumping are available with some operators and suit confident swimmers. Short walks to waterfalls near Rishikesh make a pleasant half-day for those who want nature without a big adrenaline rush.

Sample adventure trip plans

One day from Haridwar or Rishikesh

  • Morning pickup and transfer to the rafting start point
  • Safety briefing and rafting
  • Change clothes and have lunch
  • Optional: a second activity, only if the timings and locations work
  • Evening return to Haridwar or Rishikesh, or Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat

Two days and one night

  • Day 1: Arrive, check in at your camp, enjoy the confirmed camp activities, evening bonfire and dinner.
  • Day 2: Breakfast, rafting at your confirmed slot, change and lunch, then return.

Weekend with friends or colleagues

Add bungee or zipline on one day and rafting on the other, with a camp night in between. For office groups, we can plan team activities and arrange transport from Haridwar, Dehradun or Delhi.

If some people in your group do not want to take part in adventure activities, we will plan a relaxed alternative for them, such as sightseeing in Rishikesh, a café afternoon or a visit to Neelkanth Mahadev. Our Rishikesh destination guide has more ideas.

Best time for adventure activities in Rishikesh

  • October to November: clear water, pleasant days and comfortable camps. One of the best times.
  • December to February: cold water and chilly nights, but rafting is still enjoyable for many. Pack warm clothes for camp evenings.
  • March to June: warm days and the most popular rafting season. Weekends get busy, so book ahead.
  • July to August/September: monsoon. Rafting is usually closed; other activities depend on the weather.

What affects the price?

Your total depends on the activities, the operator, the camp type, group size, dates, meals and pickup point. Ask for a quote that shows separately:

  • Each activity's charge
  • Camp or hotel, occupancy and meals
  • Pickup, transfers, parking and waiting time
  • Photos, video and optional add-ons
  • Taxes, cancellation terms and weather-related changes

A clear, itemised quote is far more useful than an unexplained "starting from" price.

What to send with your enquiry

To get an accurate plan quickly, tell us:

  • Your travel date(s)
  • Number of adults, and children with their ages
  • Pickup location (Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun airport, Delhi)
  • Preferred stay type (camp, cottage, hotel)
  • Activities you want
  • Anyone who prefers to skip the activities

Please do not share detailed medical information in a public form. The activity operator will handle health screening directly.

For transfers, see our Haridwar to Rishikesh taxi service. If you also want sightseeing, our Haridwar–Rishikesh–Neelkanth tour combines well with an adventure day.
