Chamoli is one of those names that confuses travellers. Some people mean the small town of Chamoli on the Badrinath highway. Others mean Chamoli district, which is huge and includes Badrinath, Auli, the Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Sahib, Roopkund and much more. If you plan a trip without knowing which "Chamoli" you mean, you can easily end up with a hotel that is hours away from what you came to see.
This guide clears up that confusion, answers the common "Garhwal or Kumaon?" question, and helps you choose the right part of Chamoli for your trip.
Is Chamoli in Garhwal or Kumaon?
Chamoli is in Garhwal. It is part of the Garhwal division of Uttarakhand, along with districts such as Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Tehri and Pauri. Kumaon is the eastern half of the state, with places like Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh. Chamoli shares its eastern border with Kumaon's Bageshwar district, which is why people sometimes mix them up.
You can combine Garhwal and Kumaon on a longer road trip, but the drive between them is a full travel day, not a quick sightseeing hop.

Chamoli town, Gopeshwar and Chamoli district
| Name | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Chamoli town | A small town on the Alaknanda, on the Rishikesh–Badrinath road | A road junction and stop, not a big tourist base |
| Gopeshwar | The district headquarters, a short drive up from Chamoli town | Better facilities; base for the Gopinath Temple and Rudranath trek |
| Chamoli district | The whole administrative area | Covers Badrinath, Auli, Joshimath, Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Sahib, Karnaprayag, Nandprayag, Gairsain and more |
Interesting fact: Gairsain, the summer capital of Uttarakhand, is also in Chamoli district.
Choose the right Chamoli travel circuit
Instead of picking a hotel first and then adding a long list of attractions, start with what you want from the trip.
| Your main interest | Build the trip around | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Pilgrimage | Badrinath and Mana | Travel within the temple's open season |
| Snow, skiing and mountain views | Joshimath and Auli | Stay in Auli or Joshimath; check road and ski conditions |
| Flowers and trekking | Govindghat, Ghangaria, Valley of Flowers | A multi-day trek in season |
| Sikh pilgrimage | Hemkund Sahib via Ghangaria | Opening dates are announced each year |
| Quiet temple town | Gopeshwar and Gopinath Temple | A slower stay with local temples |
| River confluences | Karnaprayag and Nandprayag | Stops along the main highway |
| Harder treks | Kuari Pass, Roopkund, Rudranath | Dedicated trekking plan with a local team |
These are different trips. Trying to do all of them in one short holiday leaves you spending most of the time in a car.
Places to visit in Chamoli district
Badrinath and Mana
Badrinath, one of the Char Dham, is the most visited place in the district. Mana village, about 3 km away, is a natural add-on with Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Plan the darshan first and keep Mana flexible. For 2026, the temple committee announced that Badrinath will close for winter on 16 November. See our Badrinath guide and Mana Village guide.
Joshimath and Auli
Joshimath (officially Jyotirmath) is the town in the valley, with Narsingh Temple and the Jyotirmath peeth. Auli, above it, is known for its slopes, snow and views of Nanda Devi. The Joshimath–Auli ropeway has been suspended since the 2023 land subsidence, so plan to go up by road. Read our Joshimath guide and Auli guide.
Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib
These two share a starting point at Govindghat and an overnight stop at Ghangaria. The Valley of Flowers National Park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Nanda Devi National Park. Hemkund Sahib is a high-altitude Sikh shrine beside a glacial lake. Both involve proper trekking and are only open in season. Neither is a drive-up attraction from Chamoli town.
Gopeshwar and the Gopinath Temple
Gopeshwar is a pleasant hill town with the ancient Gopinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and known for its old trident (trishul). It is also the base for the trek to Rudranath, one of the Panch Kedar. Our Gopeshwar travel guide covers the town in detail.
Nandprayag and Karnaprayag
Two of the Panch Prayag fall in Chamoli district: Nandprayag, where the Nandakini meets the Alaknanda, and Karnaprayag, where the Pindar joins it. Both make good short stops on the Badrinath road. See our Karnaprayag guide and Panch Prayag route guide.
Anusuya Devi Temple
Near Gopeshwar, a walk through forest leads to the temple of Mata Anusuya, revered by couples praying for children. It makes a peaceful half-day outing from Gopeshwar for those comfortable with walking.
How to reach Chamoli
By road: From Haridwar and Rishikesh, the highway runs through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar and Karnaprayag towards Chamoli. After that, your route depends on your real destination. Gopeshwar is a short climb from Chamoli town; Joshimath, Auli and Badrinath are further up the same highway.
By air: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, is the nearest commercial airport.
By train: Haridwar and Rishikesh are the most convenient railheads.
When asking for a cab quote, name your hotel town, not just "Chamoli". A transfer to Gopeshwar is a very different trip from one to Badrinath.

Best time to visit: decide by destination
There is no single "best month" for the whole district, because altitude changes everything.
- Badrinath: late April/May to November, as per the temple's announced dates.
- Valley of Flowers: the park is open in the summer and monsoon months; peak blooms are usually from July to August, but rain is heavy then.
- Auli for snow: winter, though snowfall is never guaranteed.
- Gopeshwar and lower towns: most of the year, avoiding heavy monsoon days.
The monsoon (July to September) brings frequent landslides on the Badrinath highway. If you travel then, keep extra days in your plan.
Where to stay
Stay close to what you want to see:
- Gopeshwar for a town and temple trip
- Joshimath or Auli for snow and mountain views
- Badrinath for a pilgrimage
- Ghangaria for the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib
- Karnaprayag as a night halt on the long drive
A listing that says "hotel in Chamoli district" could be anywhere across a very large area. Always check the exact address, road access, stairs, heating and meals before you pay.
