Why is it called Robbers Cave?
The local name Guchhupani means hidden water, because the stream seems to vanish into the rock. The English name comes from the story that bandits once used the cave as a hideout. The cave has two parts, with a broken fort wall visible in the middle and a stretch where the roof is so low that you have to bend.
What to do
- Walk through the stream from the entrance to the waterfall.
- See the waterfall, about 10 m high at its tallest point.
- Spot the point where the stream disappears and then reappears.
- Try local snacks at the small stalls near the entrance.
- Take the nature path towards Anarwala village.
How to reach
Take a cab or auto from the Dehradun railway station or the Clock Tower. The ride takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Local buses reach Anarwala, followed by a short walk of about 1 km. From Haridwar, expect a drive of 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the area. Our Haridwar to Dehradun taxi can combine this with Sahastradhara.
Best time to visit
October to March is pleasant. The cave has more water in the monsoon, which can make it risky, and some sections may close. Avoid the cave after heavy rain. Go early in the day for a quieter experience and better light.
Tips
- Wear sandals or water shoes with a good grip.
- Carry a plastic bag for phones and a spare set of clothes.
- Keep children close because the stream is cold and the rocks are slippery.
- Hold a torch if the lights are weak.
- Do not enter during heavy rain or flood warning.
- Keep the cave clean and avoid plastic.
