About Sahastradhara, Dehradun

Sahastradhara means a thousand-fold spring, and the name suits the place. Water drips from limestone formations and flows down the hillside in many fine streams, forming sulphur springs that visitors have used for generations. It sits on the Baldi River just outside Dehradun and is one of the easiest nature stops in the Doon valley.

What makes it special

The falls drop over limestone, and as the water passes through the rock it picks up sulphur. Locals and visitors believe the water has healing qualities for skin conditions. The area has small caves, a stream you can walk through and a good spot to sit and rest. The ropeway, the monsoon waterfalls and the cool air make it a popular family stop.

What to see and do

  • Sulphur springs and the water that drips from the stalactites.
  • Cave area and the rock-lined stream.
  • Ropeway to the hilltop view over the Baldi valley.
  • Walk along the stream, with plenty of small shops and snack stalls.
  • Paragliding and adventure activities are sometimes offered nearby in season.

How to reach

Sahastradhara is a 30 to 45 minute drive from Dehradun city. From Haridwar, the route via Dehradun takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Taxis and autos run from Dehradun's Clock Tower and railway station. Our Haridwar to Dehradun taxi can add Sahastradhara and Robbers Cave to one day trip.

Best time to visit

The monsoon, from July to September, shows the falls at their best but also brings slippery paths and flash flood risk, so follow local warnings. October to March is cool and comfortable. Summers are warm, but the cave and stream give some relief. Visit early to avoid weekend crowds.

Tips

  1. Carry a change of clothes if you plan to get wet.
  2. Wear sandals or shoes with grip for the stream.
  3. Avoid the water after heavy rain.
  4. Keep valuables in a sealed bag.
  5. Check the ropeway fare and timings at the counter.
  6. Stay on marked paths and follow staff advice.
