Tour Overview

Gangotri, on the Bhagirathi at about 3,100 metres, is the seat of Goddess Ganga and the source of the river the pilgrim's route follows. You can drive all the way to the temple, with no trek, but the journey is long: about 280 km from Haridwar, normally split over two days with a night at Uttarkashi. This 2-night, 3-day Gangotri yatra from Haridwar is planned around that, with a stay at Netala near Uttarkashi, an early start for Gangotri, and stops at Gangnani and Harsil on the way back. The 2027 opening date has not been announced; the temple traditionally opens on Akshaya Tritiya, and we confirm each departure after the official date is out.

Distances differ a little between sources. The Bhagirathi Road is slower than the numbers suggest because of narrow stretches and repair work. Rishikesh is about 25 km closer than Haridwar.

Darshan at Gangotri

The temple of Goddess Ganga stands on the right bank of the Bhagirathi. Pilgrims usually bathe at the ghat before darshan; the water is icy, so the dip is quick. Temple timings change with the season and festivals; our earlier guidance was about 4:00 AM to 9:00 PM. For the temple and its surroundings, see our Gangotri destination guide. For the 2027 season plan, see our Gangotri Yatra 2027 guide.

Gangnani, Harsil and Mukhba on the way

Gangnani has a natural hot spring, and Harsil, about 25 km before Gangotri, has deodar forests, orchards and the river. Harsil is a destination in its own right: see Harsil Valley and our Harsil vs Uttarkashi stay comparison. In winter Goddess Ganga is worshipped at Mukhba village; see our Mukhba guide. If you want a long stay in the valley, see our 3-day Harsil Valley tour instead of stretching this plan.

Dates and registration for 2027

The 2027 opening date has not been announced. Gangotri traditionally opens on Akshaya Tritiya, around 8–9 May 2027, and the temple committee confirms the exact time. For reference, it opened on 19 April in 2026 and closes on 10 November 2026 at 12:05 PM (Annakut); these are history, not 2027 facts. Registration is mandatory and free on the Uttarakhand Registration and Tourist Care portal. Carry the registration letter or QR code and a photo ID. Our Char Dham 2027 guide has the wider planning.

Travel tips

  • Start early on Day 2 and aim to cross the Bhatwari–Gangnani stretch in daylight.
  • Carry thermals, woollens, a raincoat and a warm cap; it is cold at Gangotri in every season.
  • Carry motion-sickness tablets for the hill road, and a first-aid kit.
  • Carry medicines, ID and your registration letter.
  • Keep cash for the upper valley; ATMs are scarce beyond Uttarkashi.
  • Emergency numbers: 104 (medical) and 108 (ambulance).
