What happens during the aarti
Priests stand on the ghat steps with tall lamps and perform the aarti in unison while devotees sing. People float small leaf boats carrying flowers and a lit diya, and the river fills with tiny lights. In Kumbh years and on Ganga Dussehra, Kartik Purnima and other festivals, the scene is even bigger. Tens of thousands of people can gather on a normal evening, so the energy is high.
Best places to watch
- On the main ghat steps. The closest view, but you need to arrive early and sit for an hour or more.
- The footbridges over the Ganga. Good for photographs of the lamps and diyas, but they can get crowded and security may move people along.
- The opposite bank near Mansa Devi side. A calmer viewpoint with a wider frame.
- Rooftop cafes and rooms near the ghat. Comfortable and private. Ask your hotel if they have a view.
- Mansa Devi ropeway cabin. Not for the aarti itself, but the sunset view over the ghat is memorable.
How to attend and join the diya offering
The aarti is free to attend. Small offering sets with flowers and a diya are sold on the ghat. Fix the price before you buy and keep your bag close. Some priests and organisers offer reserved seating or special puja. Ask clearly what is included and confirm the amount first. You do not have to buy anything to attend.
Tips to enjoy it without stress
- Reach the ghat 60 to 90 minutes before the aarti starts if you want a front view.
- Wear a light jacket in winter, as it gets cold on the water.
- Carry only a phone and a small amount of cash.
- Keep children by your side and agree on a meeting point.
- Use the walkway that keeps you away from the water during peak crowd.
- Plan your return by walking to the main road, where autos and cabs wait.
Best time to visit
Winter is the most comfortable season. The aarti is spectacular in October and November, especially around Kartik Purnima. Summer evenings are long and warm, and the monsoon can bring a high and fast river, with restricted bathing but aarti usually continuing. For the Kumbh, expect heavy restrictions and crowds on key dates.
How to reach
Har Ki Pauri is about 1.5 to 2 km from the railway station. Vehicles stop at designated points on busy days, so be ready to walk. Read the full ghat guide on our Har Ki Pauri page and see Brahma Kund for the holy dip.
