Why Brahma Kund is sacred
According to the Puranic account, gods and demons churned the ocean to get amrit, the nectar of immortality. While the pot was carried away, drops fell at four places on earth: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Nashik. The place in Haridwar where the drops fell is believed to be Brahma Kund at Har Ki Pauri. This is why Haridwar hosts the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh Mela, and why the royal baths take place here. The name Har Ki Pauri means the steps of Hari, and a footprint associated with Vishnu is revered on the ghat wall.
What the snan involves
Devotees step down the stone stairs into the river, hold the chain rails that are fixed along the ghat, and take three dips. Many make an offering of flowers and a lamp, then sit on the steps for a few minutes. A priest, called a pandit, can help with sankalp and rituals if you want them. Agree on any dakshina before the ritual begins, and decline if you do not want a long ceremony.
The water here is cold and fast, especially in winter and in the monsoon. Ghat staff keep the stream moving, but you should still take the rails seriously.
Safety and etiquette
- Hold the chain rails at all times, and never bathe alone with small children.
- Do not carry jewellery or phones into the water.
- Use the changing rooms on the ghat instead of changing in the open.
- Do not use soap or shampoo in the river.
- Avoid bathing when the water level is very high after heavy rain.
- Keep your belongings with someone you trust.
Best time to visit
Early morning is the most peaceful time and also considered the most auspicious. The evening is lively because of the Ganga aarti. In Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh years, the main snan days see millions of pilgrims, so check official bathing dates and plan your hotel early.
