Why visit Gun Hill
On a clear day, you can see the Himalayan ranges such as Bandarpunch and Srikanth, and the whole Doon valley spread below. The name comes from a cannon that was once fired at noon so that people could set their clocks. A telescope on the hill lets you look at distant peaks, and on a very clear morning some visitors spot the Gangotri range.
What to do
- Ride the ropeway from Jhula Ghar on Mall Road.
- Look through the telescope at the peaks.
- Try the stalls and games such as balloon shooting and ring toss.
- Eat hot snacks, including Maggi, pakoras and tea.
- Take portraits in traditional Garhwali dress at the photo stalls.
- Walk up instead of riding. It is a steep walk of about 20 minutes and not recommended for senior citizens.
How to reach
Gun Hill is in the centre of Mussoorie, about 1.7 km from the Library bus stop. From Dehradun it is about 34 km and 1 hour 20 minutes by road. From Haridwar, plan around 3 hours. Mall Road is closed to private vehicles, so park at the designated lot and walk or take an e-rickshaw. Our Haridwar to Dehradun taxi can arrange a full Mussoorie day trip.
Best time to visit
Morning gives the clearest views. Sunsets are lovely from late October to March. Summer is busy, so avoid weekends if possible. In monsoon, clouds cover the view and the ropeway may close in bad weather.
Tips
- Reach early to avoid ropeway queues.
- Carry a light jacket, because the top is windy.
- Pay only listed prices for photos and games.
