Legend
According to the story of Sati, Lord Shiva carried her body across the land after her death. Her head is said to have fallen on this hill, which makes it a Shakti Peeth. The goddess is worshipped as a form of Parvati. The name changed over time from Sirkhanda to Surkanda.
The trek
The usual route starts at Kaddukhal village on the Mussoorie to Chamba Road. A paved path climbs about 2 km to the temple, taking roughly 30 minutes one way for most people. Ponies are sometimes available for those who prefer not to walk. A longer 8 km forest trek starts from Dhanaulti for those who want a full day on foot. The ascent is steady, so take breaks and carry water.
What you will see
From the temple, there is a 360 degree view of the Himalayas, including peaks of the Garhwal range on clear days. You can also see the Doon valley, Rishikesh and Chandrabadni, and the hills towards Chakrata. The temple is small and simple, with a bell, a shrine and a prayer hall. Cloud cover can reduce visibility, so choose a clear day.
Festival
The Surkanda Devi fair is held on Ganga Dussehra, in May or June, and draws many devotees. Navratri is also busy. If you want a calm visit, avoid these days.
How to reach
From Mussoorie, drive about 35 km to Kaddukhal. From Dhanaulti, it is a short ride of around 7 to 9 km. Start early so that you reach the top before afternoon clouds form. Our Haridwar to Dehradun taxi and local cabs can arrange the drive.
Best time to visit
March to June and September to November give clear weather. Winter brings snow, which looks beautiful but can block the road. The monsoon covers the hill in cloud and makes the path slippery.
