Tour Overview
Yamunotri is the first shrine of the Char Dham circuit and the source of the Yamuna. This 2-night, 3-day Yamunotri Yatra from Haridwar is built around the one thing that decides the trip: the 6 km walk from Janki Chatti to the temple. We give you a night at Barkot before the trek, a start early enough to finish in daylight, and a day to drive back in comfort. It suits families, couples and groups who want Yamunotri on its own, without committing to a longer Dham circuit.

The Yamunotri trek from Janki Chatti
Motorable road ends at Janki Chatti. The path to the temple is about 6 km one way and climbs steadily, with water and tea stops along the way. For the route, difficulty and pacing, read our Yamunotri trek guide. Wear shoes with grip, carry a raincoat and start early, because the downhill walk should be finished in daylight.
Pony and palki
If you cannot or do not want to walk the whole way, ponies and palkis are available at Janki Chatti. They are arranged locally and paid for directly. Rates change each season and depend on the option, and our earlier guidance was roughly ₹2,500–₹8,000 per person. Our driver and trip coordinator will guide you to the authorized counter. Pony and palki fares are not part of the package price.
Where you stay
Barkot is the town base for Yamunotri, with the widest choice of hotels and facilities. If you prefer a shorter morning, Kharsali and Janki Chatti are closer to the trek but have fewer, simpler rooms. Our Barkot, Kharsali and Janki Chatti stay guide explains the trade-off.
Registration and travel requirements
Yatra registration is mandatory and free on the Uttarakhand government's Registration and Tourist Care portal. Carry the registration letter or QR code and a photo ID for every traveller. Our team can guide you through the registration once your dates are fixed.
2027 dates. The 2027 opening date of Yamunotri has not been announced. The temple traditionally opens on Akshaya Tritiya, which falls around 8–9 May 2027 depending on the calendar source, and the committee confirms the exact time closer to the date. For reference, it opened on 19 April in 2026 and closes on 11 November 2026 (Bhai Dooj). We confirm your departure only after the opening date is announced.
Important instructions
- The trek is for people who can walk 12 km in a day with rests, or who will use a pony or palki. Check with your doctor if you have heart, blood pressure, breathing or knee concerns.
- Start early on Day 2 and plan to be off the trail by dark.
- Carry warm clothes, rain protection, medicines, a torch, water and light snacks.
- Mobile signal is weak in places; tell your family your plan.
- Weather and landslides can delay or reroute the journey. We will adjust the plan for safety, and any extra stay or transport will be charged as per our policy.
Booking and cancellation
To book, send your dates, group size and pickup city on WhatsApp or the enquiry form. We will confirm availability and the final price in writing before you pay. Cancellation and refund terms are on our cancellation policy page.
Add more Dhams
If you also want Gangotri, our 5-day Gangotri Yamunotri Yatra combines both from Haridwar. For the temple, its history and the surrounding places, see the Yamunotri destination guide.
