If you want to be in Haridwar for the Kumbh in 2027, start with this page. It explains what the Ardh Kumbh is, when it happens, how the bathing days work, what the Akhara processions are, and how to plan your trip. Where a topic needs more room, a link takes you to the page that covers it in full.

- First bathing day: 14 January, Makar Sankranti
- Last bathing day: 20 April, Chaitra Purnima

Which Kumbh is this?
If you search for "Kumbh 2027", you will see Haridwar and Nashik together. This page is only about Haridwar.
You will also see the event called both "Ardh Kumbh 2027" and "Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027". They mean the same gathering. If a hotel or package offer does not clearly say Haridwar, ask before you pay anything.
What is the Ardh Kumbh?
The Kumbh Mela is held in four cities in turn: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Nashik. Each city hosts the full Kumbh once every twelve years. Haridwar and Prayagraj also hold an Ardh Kumbh, the "half" Kumbh, six years after the full one. The last full Kumbh in Haridwar was in 2021, so 2027 is the Ardh Kumbh year.
The festival comes from the story of the Samudra Manthan. In it, gods and demons churned the ocean to win a pot of amrit, the nectar of immortality. Drops of it are said to have fallen at four places: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik and Ujjain. Those became the Kumbh sites. The dates are worked out from the positions of Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon.
For many families, this is the reason to come: a bath in the Ganga at Haridwar on one of the auspicious days.
Why 2027 is getting so much attention
- The 2021 Kumbh was held under pandemic restrictions. The Chief Minister has said the shahi snan then was only symbolic. People have been waiting for a full Haridwar Kumbh since.
- The Akharas will take the Amrit Snan in full ceremony. The Chief Minister has said that, for the first time at an Ardh Kumbh, the sadhus will take the royal bath in the grand way, on three days.
- The government says it will be run on the lines of a Purna Kumbh. Officials have spoken about crowd control, traffic management and emergency response, and the state had set October 2026 as the target to finish permanent works.
Shahi Snan or Amrit Snan?
You will see both words. Older reports and many websites say Shahi Snan, "royal bath". Recent official announcements call the Akharas' bath the Amrit Snan, and news reports often write "Amrit (royal)". They describe the same ceremony, and the newer official word is Amrit.
What matters for you is the day, not the name. On these days the Akharas go to the river in a fixed order, and access to Har Ki Pauri changes around them. Those are the days with the heaviest crowds and the most restrictions. If you do not need to attend, plan around them. If you do, plan with extra care.
Not every bathing day is an Amrit Snan. Ten days are bathing festivals, and three of them are Amrit Snans. Be careful when a website calls every date an Amrit Snan.
You may also see 20 April, Chaitra Purnima, listed as a fourth Amrit Snan on some travel websites. We have not found an official source that says so. The 30 September note says there are four but gives no date, so we do not add one.
The Akharas, the Peshwai and the processions
The Akharas are the monastic orders at the heart of the Kumbh. There are 13, and they fall into three broad groups: the Shaiva Akharas (followers of Shiva, including the large Juna Akhara, which is known for its Naga sadhus), the Vaishnava Akharas (followers of Vishnu) and the Udasin Akharas. Representatives of all 13 took part in the meeting where the 2027 dates were finalised.
Two events are worth knowing:
- The Peshwai. This is the ceremonial entry of an Akhara into the Mela area, with a procession. It happens before the bathing days.
- The Amrit Snan procession. On an Amrit Snan day, each Akhara goes to the ghat in a traditional order. The Naga sadhus are among the first to enter the water. The heads of the Akharas travel in the procession, with music and chanting.
If you want to watch a procession, follow the viewing spots and instructions given by the authorities that day. Do not go to a crowded rooftop or a narrow lane because someone online suggested it. If you only want a quiet bath, plan for a different hour or a different day, because public access to the ghat is arranged around the Akharas.
What the ten bathing days mean
You do not need to know the background of each day to visit. But it helps when you choose a date, and it explains why some days draw bigger crowds. The exact dates are on our dates page. Here is what each occasion is:
- Makar Sankranti (January). The Sun moves into the sign of Makara. Many people bathe and give charity on this day. It is the first bathing day of the Mela.
- Mauni Amavasya (February). The new moon day, when many people keep silence (mauna) and fast. It is one of the most important bathing days of any Kumbh.
- Basant Panchami (February). The festival that welcomes spring. People also worship Saraswati, the goddess of learning.
- Magh Purnima (February). The full moon of the month of Magh, a traditional day for bathing in a holy river.
- Mahashivratri (March). The night of Shiva, observed with fasting and prayer. It is the first Amrit Snan.
- Phalguna Amavasya (March). The new moon day in the month of Phalguna. It is the second Amrit Snan.
- Nav Samvatsar (April). The start of the Hindu new year.
- Mesh Sankranti (April). The Sun moves into the sign of Mesha. In many parts of India it is also celebrated as Baisakhi. It is the third Amrit Snan.
- Ram Navami (April). The birthday of Lord Rama.
- Chaitra Purnima (April). The full moon of the month of Chaitra. It is the last bathing day of the Mela.
Choosing your day
Ask yourself one question: is there one snan you must attend?
If yes, plan the whole trip around it. Reach Haridwar before the day, keep a spare day after, and get date-change terms in writing.
If you are flexible, decide what matters most: an easy hotel approach, fewer transfers, or a rest day in between. Nobody can honestly promise a "less crowded" day, but the days between the main snans are generally easier.
On length of stay, two nights suit most families: one to arrive, one for snan, one to leave. Add a night for older parents, small children or a fixed date. The days you spend travelling to Haridwar from your home city are separate from your Haridwar stay.
What to expect on the roads
Large pilgrim events usually limit private vehicles near the main ghats. They often use parking areas outside the city, with shuttle buses and a walk from a drop point. You may see websites state exact distances and parking places for 2027. We have not found an official traffic order for visitors yet, so we do not repeat those numbers.
What this means for you:
- Do not plan on a car or taxi reaching the ghat or your hotel's door on a major snan day.
- Ask your hotel where vehicles can stop on your dates and how far the walk is.
- Wear comfortable footwear and keep your luggage small.

Where you stay matters more than what the room looks like
Hotels like to say "near Har Ki Pauri". On a map, everything is near. What matters is the last part: the steps at the entrance, the lanes, the place where a car can stop, and who carries the luggage. A hotel can have a lift and still have steps at the front. A hotel can have parking and still be on a closed road.
Staying very close to Har Ki Pauri means the shortest walk but the heaviest crowds and the most restrictions. Staying further out can mean a longer walk but an easier exit. Getting to Haridwar
Haridwar is on the rail network and connected by road. For flights, the Haridwar district administration points to Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun. In earlier Kumbh years, Indian Railways ran extra trains and added services. Similar arrangements may be announced for 2027, but we have not found a timetable yet.
Your train ticket or flight gets you to Haridwar. It does not tell you where a vehicle will be allowed to stop. On the day of the snan
Treat the bath as the one main event of that day. If you have time and energy afterwards, add aarti or a temple visit. Do not put six things into one day.
Access to Har Ki Pauri and the other ghats will follow the instructions in force that day. A hotel booking or a package does not buy a particular ghat at a particular hour. Our guide to the ghats in Haridwar and the Har Ki Pauri page help you choose.
Agree a meeting point inside your group before you go in. Make sure everyone has the hotel's phone number written down. Keep your shoes and valuables safe, and carry a small amount of cash. Phone signals can be poor in a crowd. Carry an ID, basic medicines and drinking water, and follow official announcements.
Rules and manners at the ghat
A few simple habits make the bath easier for you and for everyone around you:
- Follow the signs, barricades and the instructions of the police and Mela staff. They can change from day to day.
- Bathe in the areas marked for it, and use the changing areas where they are provided.
- Do not throw plastic, flowers in bags or other rubbish into the river or on the steps. Use the bins.
- Ask before you take a photo of a person, and especially of a sadhu. Do not block a procession to get a picture.
- Do not push in a crowd. If it is too dense, step back and wait.
- Keep children and older family members close to you, and hold hands in a crowd.
Weather and what to carry
Haridwar is cold in the early morning and evening in January and February, especially near the river. March warms up. By April the afternoons can be hot. Check the forecast a few days before you travel, and pack for the hour you will actually be at the ghat, which is often early morning.
A simple list:
- A warm layer for early mornings in January and February, and a light cotton set for March and April
- A towel and a dry set of clothes in a waterproof bag
- Footwear that is comfortable and easy to take off
- A small day bag, not a large suitcase
- Your ID, basic medicines and any prescribed medicine
- A water bottle and a power bank
- A small amount of cash, and a card or phone payment as backup
- The hotel's phone number written on paper
Travelling with parents or small children
Tell whoever is booking for you about stairs, walking limits, meal times and luggage early. It changes which hotel makes sense. Ask for important things in writing: "we will try for a ground-floor room" and "a ground-floor room is confirmed" mean different things. A longer stay reduces rushing, but no plan can make every route easy for every person. For anything medical, talk to your own doctor.
Har Ki Pauri and the Ganga aarti
Har Ki Pauri means "the steps of Hari", the steps on the river bank where the Ganga is easy to reach. The spot known as Brahma Kund is the part most people think of as the holiest place to bathe. The evening aarti here is one of the best-known sights in Haridwar: lamps, bells and chanting at the water's edge.
On Kumbh days, the timings, the entry points and the areas open to the public can change. Check the instructions in force on the day, and arrive early if you want to see the aarti.
Beyond the holy dip
If you have an extra day, Haridwar has more to see:
- Evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri. Arrive early for a good place, and check the timing on the day.
- Mansa Devi temple. A hilltop temple above the city, with views over the river.
- Chandi Devi and Maya Devi. Two more temples that many visitors add.
- Sapt Rishi Ashram. A quieter place by the Ganga, away from the main ghats.
- Rajaji National Park. Forest near Haridwar, for a change from the crowds.
- Rishikesh. Easy to add after your Haridwar stay, on a separate day. See our Haridwar to Rishikesh taxi.
Keep these on separate days from the main bath where you can.
Adding Rishikesh or Mussoorie
Rishikesh after Haridwar is simple to add. Mussoorie needs more road time and a weather check, so it works better as a longer holiday than a quick add-on. Do not assume a Kumbh visit can be combined with darshan at the main Char Dham temples. Their opening dates have to be checked separately for your travel window.
Common mistakes to avoid
These are the problems we hear about most:
- Choosing a hotel by its distance on the map. The steps, lanes and drop point matter more.
- Arriving on the morning of the snan. Arrive the day before.
- Booking a tight train or flight after the bath. Roads are slow, so leave a buffer.
- Putting too much into one day. Keep the bath as the main event.
- Trusting the first website for dates. Check the source and the date of publication.
- Expecting a car to reach the ghat or the hotel door. Ask where vehicles can stop.
- Having no meeting point in the group. Decide one before you go in.
- Paying in full with no written terms. Get the room, meals, date-change and cancellation terms in writing first.
- Not planning a rest day. A tired group makes poor decisions in a crowd.
How to follow official updates
Plans for a Kumbh change as notices come out, so check the source of anything you read. The most reliable places are the Mela administration's notices, the Uttarakhand government's press notes, the Governor's office (Lok Bhavan) and the Haridwar district administration. Local news reports are useful, but look for the date on them and see which official notice they quote.
Be careful with forwarded messages and old social media posts. An old post can look new when it is shared again. We follow these sources and update our dates page when something changes.
