Auli vs Chopta: Which Should You Choose?

In the Auli vs Chopta question, choose Auli for snow, skiing and comfortable hotels, and Chopta for trekking, forests and a simple camping experience. If you have five days, don't choose at all: they're only about 110–120 km apart and fit into one easy loop from Haridwar.

Both places are in Uttarakhand's Garhwal Himalayas, and both have huge mountain views. But they feel completely different. Chopta is a forest meadow with camps and a famous trek. Auli is a ski area with hotels and wide-open slopes. We take travellers to both every season, and this is our honest comparison.

Snow and winter

Both places usually get snow from late December to February, though timing changes every year. Some Decembers are dry.

Auli is the safer bet for snow. Its slopes are wider, higher and more open, so snow settles and stays longer. From about mid-January, there's usually enough for skiing. You can play in the snow right outside your hotel.

Chopta looks magical under snow: white meadows, frosted rhododendrons and a snow-covered trail to Tungnath. But heavy snowfall can close the road between Duggalbitta and Chopta, and camps may move you a few kilometres lower.

If snow is your main reason for travelling, pick Auli or do both. Read the best time to visit Auli Chopta for the month-by-month picture.

Auli During Winter And Summer

Trekking

Chopta wins clearly here. The trail climbs about 3.5 km to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and about 1.5 km more to Chandrashila peak at around 4,000 m. From the top, you see Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, Trishul and Nanda Devi in one sweep. It's one of the best short treks in India for beginners: paved most of the way and done in 5–6 hours. All the details are in our Tungnath Chandrashila trek guide.

Near Chopta, you can also walk to Deoria Tal, a forest lake that reflects the Chaukhamba peaks. See our Deoria Tal guide.

Auli's walks are gentler. Gurson Bugyal, a wide meadow, is about 3 km from the ski slopes through forest, with Chattrakund lake about 1 km beyond. Longer multi-day treks like Kuari Pass also start from this area.

Skiing and snow activities

Only Auli has proper ski slopes. In season, you can take a beginner lesson with a local instructor and rent all your gear on the spot. GMVN, the state tourism corporation, also runs longer courses. Read skiing in Auli for beginners. Chopta has no skiing, but snow walks and snowball fights are free!

Stay and comfort

Auli and Joshimath have proper hotels with heaters, hot water and attached bathrooms. Many Auli rooms look straight at Nanda Devi. If comfort matters, Auli is the easier choice.

Chopta is inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, where permanent construction is restricted. Most stays are camps and simple lodges. Tents have mattresses, sleeping bags and heavy quilts; some have attached toilets, many have shared ones. There's no grid electricity, so power comes from solar panels or generators for a few hours. Many properties listed online as "Chopta hotels" are actually in Duggalbitta, Baniyakund, Sari or Ukhimath, a few kilometers away.

The upside of Chopta? A night under more stars than you've ever seen, and the trailhead at your tent door. More in where to stay in Chopta and Auli.

Food

In both places, food is simple and filling. Camps in Chopta serve home-style dal, rice, roti and sabzi, with Maggi and tea at the stalls. Auli hotels have bigger menus, and Joshimath has small restaurants and dhabas. Don't expect cafés or fine dining in either place.

Cost

Chopta is cheaper to stay in, because camps cost less than hotels. Auli costs more, especially in snow season, and skiing adds to your spend. A combined 5-day trip from Haridwar starts at ₹9,800 per person on a package. See the full Auli Chopta trip cost.

Getting there

Chopta is closer to Haridwar (about 225 km, 7–8 hours). Auli is further (about 270–280 km, 9–10 hours). The Joshimath–Auli ropeway has been closed since January 2023, so the last 14–16 km up to Auli is by road (latest status).

The two are linked by a scenic forest road via Mandal and Gopeshwar, about 5 hours apart. See our Chopta to Auli route guide.

Crowds and atmosphere

Auli is busiest from Christmas to February, when snow brings families and ski groups. In summer and autumn, it's calm.

Chopta gets busy on long weekends and in May–June, when trekking groups arrive. On weekdays outside holidays, you might have the meadows almost to yourself.

Why most people do both

Haridwar to Chopta, then on to Auli and back, makes a natural loop. In five days you get:

  • One big trek (Tungnath–Chandrashila)
  • One snow or meadow day in Auli
  • The river confluences at Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag along the way
  • A night in a forest camp and a night with Nanda Devi outside your window

We go to Chopta first, so you adjust to the altitude slowly and do the trek while you're fresh. That's how our Auli Chopta tour package works. Planning from scratch? Start with our Auli Chopta travel guide.
