Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri is normally the first Dham visited on the journey. From Haridwar, the tour travels towards Barkot, which acts as the main overnight base for Yamunotri Dham.

The road goes up to the Janki Chatti area about 45 Kms from Barkot, From here, pilgrims continue towards Yamunotri Temple on foot or by locally available pony or palki services.

The trek is around 5–6 km one way and climbs steadily through the mountain valley. Starting early is important, particularly during May and June when pilgrim traffic can be heavy.

Gangotri Dham

The second Dham is Gangotri, reached by road from Uttarkashi.

This is one of the most scenic road sections of the complete Char Dham Yatra. The route follows the Bhagirathi River and passes through the Harsil Valley before reaching Gangotri.

Unlike Yamunotri and Kedarnath, there is no major trek required to reach Gangotri Temple.

Kedarnath Dham

Kedarnath is usually the most physically demanding part of the Char Dham Yatra.

The road journey brings pilgrims towards Guptkashi, Sitapur and Sonprayag. From the base area, local transport arrangements (shuttle services with Rs. 50/- Charges approx.) operate towards Gaurikund according to the system in place during the Yatra season.

From Gaurikund, pilgrims continue towards Kedarnath on the mountain route.

Travellers who do not want to complete the trek on foot can look at authorised pony, palki or helicopter services, subject to availability, weather and the rules applicable during the 2027 season.

Badrinath Dham

The route towards Badrinath passes through the Alaknanda Valley and several important Himalayan towns and confluences.

Char Dham Yatra Route from Haridwar

The standard Char Dham route from Haridwar moves from west to east across the Garhwal Himalayas:

Haridwar → Barkot → Yamunotri → Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Guptkashi / Sitapur → Sonprayag → Kedarnath → Badrinath → Rudraprayag → Rishikesh → Haridwar

Best Time for Char Dham Yatra 2027

May to June

May and the first part of June are among the busiest periods for Char Dham Yatra.

September to October

Char Dham opening dates are not identical every year. They are announced according to the traditions associated with each temple, but you can expect during the auspicious occasion of Akashya Tritiya Festival in May 2027.

Accommodation During Char Dham Yatra

Barkot

Badrinath
