On clear days, the snow peaks of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi and Trishul can be seen from different points. The rock that gives the road its name is easy to spot as you walk. Midway along the loop is an old cemetery from the mid-19th century, which foreign visitors sometimes visit to look for the graves of ancestors.
What to do
- Walk the loop at a relaxed pace, with benches and viewpoints along the way.
- Watch the sunset from one of the open stretches.
- Take a horse ride if you prefer not to walk.
- Photograph the camel rock and the valley views.
- Visit the cemetery quietly if you are interested in history.
How to reach
Start at Kulri Bazaar or Library Chowk on Mall Road, both of which are within walking distance of most hotels. Taxis and autos can take you to either end. From Dehradun it is about 35 km, or around 1.5 hours. Our Haridwar to Dehradun taxi can take you on to Mussoorie in a single transfer.
Best time to visit
The road is pleasant year-round, though March to June and September to November give the clearest skies. Summers are busy in the evening. In winter, wear warm layers because it is windy and cold after sunset. Monsoon brings mist and slippery patches.

- Wear shoes with grip and carry a light jacket.
- Carry water, as there are few shops along the way.
- Keep to the roadside and watch for horses.
