History
Sir George Everest was India's Surveyor General from 1830 to 1843 and led much of the Great Trigonometric Survey, which measured an arc of roughly 2,400 km from the south of India to the Himalayas. He built this house in 1832 and used it as a home and office. He lived in Mussoorie for around three decades. Mount Everest was named in his honour in 1865, even though he had objected to the idea. The building is now looked after by the state tourism department.
What to see
- The house and its remains, which show how survey officers lived.
- Small displays with facts about Everest's life and work.
- Viewpoints over the Doon Valley and the Aglar River valley.
- The cliff edge, which gives a wide view of the snow peaks on clear days.
- George Everest Peak trek, a longer trail for those who want more time outdoors.
How to reach
You can drive to the house without a trek. From Mussoorie town it is about 6 km, and the last stretch beyond Hathipaon is rough, so a local cab or jeep is the best option. If you prefer to walk, there is a forest trail from the town. Our Haridwar to Dehradun taxi can take you to Mussoorie and arrange a local taxi for this stretch.
Best time to visit
The months from October to March offer the clearest views. April to June is pleasant, though hazy. Monsoon brings clouds and slippery roads. Go in the morning, when the sky is clear, for the best photographs.
