Char Dham Yatra Season Guide
Quick Answer?
The Best time to visit Char Dham Temples is May to Mid-June and Mid-September to Oct or we can say till closing. Avoid July-August due to heavy monsoon and winter Closer from Nov to April.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
April if Opening Month:
The Temple opens on the holy occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, generally Mid-April or late -April. During this month you can expect cold weather in shrines, can also find residual snow in Kedarnath and Badrinath. You can also expect huge crowd for opening. It is best time for those who want to have darshan at opening of season. But for that you need to ensure that you have heavy woolen clothing.
May-June (Peak Season):
The Most popular time to visit Char Dham Temples in Uttarakhand, Daytime temperature ranges between 10 Degrees - 20 Degree Celsius with clear skies and stable roads. But it has a downside with peak pricing of Hotels, Cab and heavy traffic because of Summer Holidays in School and Colleges, so it takes time for Darshan at temple.
July-August (Monsoon Season):
During Monsoon you can expect heavy rains sometime which causes landslide and has risk of road blockage, as we know that its hilly region and landslide is generally common in those areas while heavy rain. The trekking to Yamunotri Dham 6 Kms and Kedarnath Dham 20 Kms also get slippery and riskier. So, most agencies and govt will suggest avoiding this season if possible.
September–October (Post Monsoon Season — Recommended):
This is highly recommended season for Char Dham Yatra Trip, because post monsoon, weather is crisp and clear, roads are more stable after monsoon repairs, and also pilgrims drop noticeably compared to Peak season. September–October can be a good choice for those who prefer cooler weather and potentially fewer crowds, subject to health, weather and route conditions. Helicopter services, where available, depend on current operations and weather.
November (Closing Month):
The temperature drops in all the regions, and also the yatra ended during Diwali festival and Bhai Dooj Festival, but you can also witness the closing ceremony of temples. The closing ceremony gathers very crowd, but the weather is good for everyone, need to keep warm clothes or we can say heavy woolen.
December - April (Winter Month - Temple Close):
During the winter season, the temperature drop sharply and generally becomes below zero degrees. The temples are closed during this time period. The deities are ceremonially moved to winter seats like Yamunotri to Kharshali, Gangotri to Mukhwa, Kedarnath or Ukhimath and Badrinath to Narsingh Temple in Joshimath. The main Char Dham temple pilgrimage is not available during the winter closure period, although devotees can visit the respective winter seats where the deities are worshipped.
