What to do in common emergencies

Altitude sickness (headache, vomiting, breathlessness). Stop climbing. Rest, drink water and go down at least 300 to 500 m if it does not improve. Visit the nearest medical relief post. This is most common at Kedarnath (3,583 m) and Yamunotri.

Road blocked by landslide. Do not try to cross the debris. Call 1077 for the district's road status. Your driver will usually know the alternate route or the nearest safe place to wait.

Vehicle accident. Call 112 and 108. Note the nearest kilometre stone so you can tell them your location.

Lost family member. Inform the nearest police post at once and call 112. At Kedarnath and Badrinath, use the temple's lost-and-found and public address system.

Health check before the yatra

The health department runs screening points on the route, and pilgrims above 50, or with heart, lung or BP problems, are advised to get a check-up before travel. Carry:

  • A doctor's note listing your medicines and any conditions
  • Medicines for at least 3 extra days
  • A copy of your Aadhaar card and yatra registration
  • Emergency contact numbers of your family

Read our guide on Char Dham Yatra with elderly parents for more health tips.
