How to Reach Harsil Valley: From Delhi, Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh

Posted on October 12, 2026by Gokeys India4 min read
Mountain Road To Auli Chopta

Harsil has no airport or railway station, so you always finish the journey by road. Travel to Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun by train or flight, then drive about 7–10 hours (about 220–270 km) via Uttarkashi. Most people break the journey at Uttarkashi or start early and drive straight through in good weather.

The two main routes

Route 1: via Chamba and Dharasu

Haridwar/Rishikesh → Narendra Nagar → Chamba → Dharasu → Uttarkashi → Bhatwari → Gangnani → Harsil. This is the shorter, more commonly used route. You can stop for Tea of Lunch at Chamba.

Route 2: via Mussoorie and Barkot

Dehradun → Mussoorie → Kempty Falls → Barkot → Uttarkashi → Harsil. Longer and more scenic, and it works better if you start from Dehradun or want to combine Mussoorie. One Gokeys team trip took about 6–7 hours from Haridwar to Barkot by this route and then a night at Uttarkashi.

Which to choose: If you are short of time, take Route 1. If you want scenery and a Mussoorie stop, take Route 2 with an overnight stay.

Uttarkashi Mountains

From your starting point

From Delhi

Delhi to Harsil is about 480 km. In practice most travellers take an overnight bus or train to Haridwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun, or drive to Haridwar/Rishikesh and sleep there, then continue the next day. Don't plan to drive the whole way in one day, especially in winter. A sensible plan is Delhi → Haridwar/Rishikesh (5–7 h), night; Haridwar/Rishikesh → Harsil next day (8–10 h); or add an Uttarkashi halt. We also offer Delhi Pickup and Drop from Haridwar with Ertiga Cabs @ 5500/- Per Way.

From Haridwar

Haridwar is our home base. Pick-up from the railway station or bus stand is standard on our package. Leave by 6–7 am for a same-day arrival in clear weather.

From Rishikesh

Slightly shorter. Rishikesh is a good place to sleep before an early start.

From Dehradun and Jolly Grant airport

Take the Mussoorie–Barkot route or cut across to Chamba. If your flight lands in the afternoon, sleep in Dehradun/Rishikesh or continue only as far as Uttarkashi; don't push on to Harsil after dark.

For bus timings, ask the state transport depot or check the current schedule rather than relying on old online tables.

Reaching Harsil in winter

  • Snow can close the road above Sukhi Top for a few hours or longer.
  • Black ice is common on shaded bends in the morning.
  • A private vehicle with a driver used to the road is safer than a bus.
  • Add a spare day; don't book a train or flight for the day after you return.
  • Read our full winter guide.

Fuel, food and breaks

  • Fuel: fill up at Uttarkashi or Bhatwari.
  • Food: simple dhabas serve dal-rice, parathas and tea along the route; Uttarkashi has a wider choice.
  • Rest stops: Chamba and Dharasu are common breaks; Uttarkashi has the Kashi Vishwanath temple if you want a short stop.
  • Cash: carry cash; ATMs are limited after Uttarkashi.
  • Network: patchy beyond Bhatwari. Download maps offline.

Tips from the road

  • Start early. Daylight is your friend on mountain roads.
  • Don't drive after dark in the upper section.
  • Carry a spare layer even in summer; Harsil is cold at night.
  • Keep medicines and water within reach; hairpin bends cause motion sickness. Pack lemon or candies.
  • Check road status the week of travel.
  • If you are travelling with non-Indian nationals, confirm current access rules for Harsil first.
  • Share your plan with family because network is limited.
