Where to Stay for Kedarnath: Choose the Right Base

Pick your Kedarnath stay based on how you're getting to the shrine and where you need to be the next morning. Trekking? Compare each hotel's distance from Sonprayag and Gaurikund. Flying? Match your hotel to your actual helicopter departure point. Staying near the temple itself is a separate booking altogether.

There's no single "best" town β€” a great choice for one traveler's plan can mean an awkward early transfer for someone else.

Listings checked: 19 September 2026. Confirm the exact property, room and availability for your dates before booking.

Step one: work out which night you're booking

A Kedarnath trip can involve up to three different stays:

NightWhat it needs to do
Before KedarnathLet you rest and reach the trek approach or helipad comfortably
Near the shrine (if included)Give you a confirmed bed after the climb
After returningA practical place to collect luggage, eat and rest before moving on

You don't need three separate hotels β€” just be clear on what each night is for. See the Kedarnath destination guide for the bigger picture; this article focuses purely on choosing your base.

BaseGood forWatch out forConfirm before booking
GuptkashiA valley stays before/after Kedarnath, or near a confirmed helicopter departureMore Road distance remains before Sonprayag Approx 30 KmsProperty location, morning transfer, luggage plan
PhataMatching a confirmed helicopter sectorA "Phata hotel" isn't automatically next to your operator's helipadActual helipad, reporting time, transfer
SitapurTrekkers prioritizing a shorter approach to SonprayagYou still need to sort the local transfer and walkHotel entrance, pickup point, morning access
SonprayagStaying right by the transfer area"Town centre" doesn't mean beside the boarding pointWalking route with luggage, room access
GaurikundA pre-trek night at the trek base itselfYou must first get yourself and your bags through the local transferAccess, arrival window, baggage storage
Kedarnath/shrine areaA separately booked night near the templeHigh-altitude stay, no normal road accessExact location, beds, bathroom, meals

Gaurikund's role as the trek base is confirmed by Rudraprayag district's Kedarnath Yatra page. Whatever base you pick, use the actual hotel pin to plan transfers β€” straight-line closeness to the temple doesn't tell you much.

Guptkashi vs. Phata: how to actually decide

Trekking? Compare the whole morning journey from each hotel β€” vehicle departure, arrival at the transfer area, local transport, and the walk to the trek entrance. Ask whether the hotel can serve meals early enough for your departure.

Flying? Check your confirmed helipad first. Don't book in Phata just because it's known for helicopters, or in Guptkashi because a package uses it as a general regional label.

For actual properties, Gokeys lists Hotel Ram Gopal in Guptkashi and Hotel Vijaya in Phata β€” ask for recent photos, the correct location pin, and current booking terms. Neither listing alone confirms a room suits limited mobility.

Staying for a trek

Sitapur or Sonprayag suit a plan built around reaching the local transfer area quickly. Gaurikund removes that morning transfer entirely β€” but you'll need to move your luggage through the local arrangement before checking in the night before. Guptkashi or Phata can still work if the whole sequence (hotel β†’ drop point β†’ local transfer β†’ Gaurikund β†’ trek) leaves enough time.

Read our Sonprayag to Gaurikund guide for that leg specifically. Gokeys also lists Hotel San Kedar in Sitapur β€” confirm its exact location rather than assuming a short walk based on the name.

Staying for a helicopter trip

Match your hotel to four things: flight date, departure helipad, reporting time, and return arrangement. A hotel "near the helipad" needs to name which helipad β€” ask for the actual transfer time from the property's door.

Kedarnath helicopter bookings run through IRCTC HeliYatra, linked from the official Uttarakhand Tourist Care site. Before paying for your hotel, ask what happens if the flight is delayed β€” can you extend your stay, and what would it cost?

If part of your group is trekking and part is flying, agree on a meeting point and a backup plan in case arrival times don't line up.

Staying near the shrine vs. Gaurikund

These are two completely different bookings. Gaurikund is before the climb; a shrine-area stay is at the Kedarnath end. Booking one doesn't cover the other.

For a shrine stay, ask clearly: is it a private room, shared room, or dormitory bed? What about bathrooms, bedding and meals? GMVN's official site is one place to check government-run accommodation β€” always confirm the specific property and your actual dates.

If altitude is a concern, talk to a doctor about the sleeping location before booking.

Where should families stay?

Start with your room and access needs, then pick the town. Two rooms close together? A parent who struggles with stairs? An early dinner for a child? These questions matter more than the town's reputation.

Ask thisWhy
Where can our vehicle actually stop? The last stretch may be on foot with luggage
How many steps to reception and the room?"Ground floor" doesn't describe the whole route
Is the bathroom attached?Room labels can be misleading
What bed arrangement is confirmed?A family room vs. an extra mattress are different things
When are meals and hot water available?Your schedule may not match hotel timing
Where do we leave bags, and on what terms? You may be checked out while visiting Kedarnath
What if our return is delayed?Ask about the policy up front

Combining Kedarnath and Badrinath

Plan your post-Kedarnath night before locking in the next long drive β€” your descent or flight return may not land exactly on schedule. A valley stay gives you a clear place to rest and collect luggage. Check the Kedarnath–Badrinath itinerary and Badrinath destination guide together so the two legs connect smoothly.

After an approximately 18–20 km descent, you may reach Gaurikund later than expected. You then have to take the local transfer back towards Sonprayag.

For many travellers, continuing immediately on a long mountain drive after this can make the day unnecessarily tiring.

Staying around Sonprayag, Sitapur, Phata or Guptkashi after returning gives you time to eat, rest and continue the journey the following morning.

Comparing prices fairly

Ask whether the rate is per room or per person, which meals are included, and what the room-sharing terms are. For a shrine-area stay, also check whether you're paying to hold a valley room while you're away, or checking out entirely. Our Char Dham cost guide shows how to fold accommodation into your total budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plan for confirmed accommodation near the shrine β€” "staying at Kedarnath" doesn't mean sleeping inside the temple. Verify the property before you travel.

Whichever matches your confirmed helipad and reporting instructions β€” the town name alone won't decide it.

Gaurikund puts you at the trek base but means moving your bags through the local transfer first. Sonprayag leaves that transfer for the next morning. Compare the actual room and access details.

Not necessarily β€” many are in valley towns along the route. Check the real location before assuming proximity.
