If you are travelling to Kedarnath by road, Sonprayag is the last major Point where your regular tour vehicle will normally drop you. From here, you have to change to a local vehicle for Gaurikund, which is the starting point of the Kedarnath trek.
The distance from Sonprayag to Gaurikund is around 5 km by road. It looks like a very short journey on the map, but during the Char Dham season it can take longer than expected because of traffic, checking, queues and waiting for local vehicles.
This is something we always recommend keeping in mind while planning your Kedarnath day. Don't calculate your trek starting time only from the 5 km distance.
In this guide, we'll explain how the Sonprayag to Gaurikund transfer works, where your main vehicle stops, what to do with your luggage and how to plan your start for the Kedarnath trek.
Sonprayag and Gaurikund Are Not the Same Place
This is probably the most common confusion among first-time Kedarnath travellers.
Sonprayag is the main road and transfer point, while Gaurikund is the starting point of the Kedarnath trek.
When you arrive at Sonprayag in your tour vehicle or private cab, you normally leave that vehicle there and continue towards Gaurikund using the local transport arrangement.
After reaching Gaurikund, you begin the trek towards Kedarnath.
The official route is commonly listed at around 16–17 km, but in practical terms you should be prepared to walk approximately 18–20 km one way. The actual distance you walk can vary depending on the current route, where you start measuring from, diversions and the location of your accommodation at Kedarnath.
From our own experience travelling on this route, it is better to prepare yourself for roughly a 20 km mountain walk rather than planning only around the minimum stated distance.

Important: Local traffic arrangements, fares and access rules can change during the Char Dham season. Follow the instructions of the local administration and police when you travel.
How to Travel from Sonprayag to Gaurikund
The process is fairly simple once you understand it.
Step 1: Reach Sonprayag
Your main vehicle will bring you towards Sonprayag. During busy Yatra dates, traffic can become heavy before you even reach the transfer point, so an early start is always helpful.
If you are staying in Sitapur or Sonprayag the previous night, ask your hotel about the current morning situation before leaving. Local traffic arrangements can change during the season.
Step 2: Leave Your Main Vehicle at Sonprayag
Your regular tour cab does not normally continue with you to Gaurikund.
If you are travelling with a Gokeys package, your driver will explain the drop and pickup arrangement. If you are travelling in your own car, use the authorized parking available for your vehicle and keep your parking receipt safely.
During peak dates, the parking location may not necessarily be right next to where you board the local vehicle, so allow some extra time for walking and queues.
Step 3: Complete Checking and Keep Your Registration Ready
Keep your Char Dham registration and photo ID easily accessible rather than packed somewhere inside your luggage.
Sonprayag is an important checking point on the Kedarnath route, and registration may be checked before you proceed further.

Step 4: Take the Local Vehicle to Gaurikund
From Sonprayag, local vehicles operate towards Gaurikund.
The road distance is only around 5 km, but don't plan this as a five or ten-minute transfer. During May and June, when Kedarnath receives large numbers of pilgrims, waiting for your turn can take time.
The fare and operating arrangements can also be revised between Yatra seasons, so use the rate displayed by the authorized local service when you travel rather than relying on an old online price.
Step 5: Reach Gaurikund and Start the Kedarnath Trek
Once you reach Gaurikund, the road-transfer part of your journey is complete.
This is where you prepare for the Kedarnath trek. Use the washroom, arrange your small trekking bag, buy anything essential you have forgotten and then proceed towards the trekking route.
If you plan to use a pony, palki or porter, use the govt. authorized booking counter and check the displayed rates before paying.
How Much Time Does Sonprayag to Gaurikund Take?
This is where looking only at Google Maps can give you the wrong idea.
The road journey itself is short. The time-consuming part can be getting to the local vehicle boarding point, completing checks and waiting for transport.
On a relatively quiet day, the process may move quickly. On a busy May or June morning, you should be prepared for a longer wait.
This is why we don't recommend planning the day down to the minute. Keep enough time between reaching Sonprayag and the time you expect to start trekking from Gaurikund.
If you want an early trek start, staying around Sonprayag or Sitapur the previous night is usually more practical than starting the same morning from a much farther location.
What Should You Do With Your Luggage?
Do not take your complete Char Dham luggage towards Kedarnath unless you genuinely need it.
For an overnight stay at Kedarnath, pack a smaller bag with the things you will actually use:
- Warm clothes
- Rain protection
- ID and registration
- Medicines
- Water and some snacks
- Phone and power bank
- Basic toiletries
- Your hotel or camp booking details
Your larger suitcase or bags can normally remain at your hotel or another arranged storage point. If you are travelling on a package, discuss this with your driver or tour coordinator before leaving for Gaurikund.
Keep cash, identification, medicines and other valuables with you.
Where Should You Stay Before Going to Gaurikund?
There are several options around the Kedarnath road, and each works differently.
Sonprayag is convenient because you are close to the local transfer point. It works particularly well if your main priority is getting an early start towards Gaurikund.
Sitapur is also close to Sonprayag and has a good range of accommodation. Many Char Dham packages use this area for the Kedarnath night halt.
Guptkashi has more hotel choices, but it is farther from Sonprayag about 30 Kms. You need to start earlier in the morning if you are staying here.
Phata can be useful particularly for travellers whose plans involve the helicopter sector, although your exact ground-transfer plan still matters.
Gaurikund puts you directly at the base of the Kedarnath trek, but getting yourself and your luggage there requires using the local transfer arrangement.

Start Early During May and June
If you are travelling during the busy part of the Char Dham season, an early start can make the day much easier.
Remember that you are not simply travelling 5 km from Sonprayag and immediately starting the trek. You may have traffic before Sonprayag, walking between the parking and transfer area, registration checks, a queue for the local vehicle and then the journey to Gaurikund.
After that, you still have the Kedarnath trek ahead of you.
This is why we generally prefer keeping the previous night's stay reasonably close to Sonprayag when the itinerary allows it.
At the same time, don't depend on an extremely early or late local transfer without checking the current arrangement. Operating times can change during the season.
Returning from Gaurikund to Sonprayag
Don't forget to plan the return journey as well.
After completing the Kedarnath trek and coming back down to Gaurikund, you again need to travel from Gaurikund to Sonprayag.
You may be tired after the descent, and there can still be a queue for local transport. Keep your driver's phone number with you and contact them when you are approaching Gaurikund or Sonprayag, depending on the arrangement you made.
Avoid planning a very long onward drive immediately after coming down from Kedarnath. Trekking time can vary considerably from one person to another, and weather or crowds can delay your return.

Common Mistakes at Sonprayag
One of the biggest mistakes is assuming that your main cab will take you directly to Gaurikund. Unless the current local arrangement specifically permits it, plan to change vehicles at Sonprayag.
Another common mistake is carrying a large suitcase towards Kedarnath. A small overnight or trekking bag is much easier to manage.
Travellers also sometimes look at the 5 km road distance and assume they can reach Gaurikund almost immediately. During busy Yatra dates, the waiting and transfer process can take much longer than the actual drive.
Finally, don't plan your return too tightly. If you have a train or flight immediately after your expected return from Kedarnath, even a small delay can create unnecessary problems.
