Gangotri Dham Temple: – The holy Gangotri temple is located at this sacred town. It is believed that at this place River Ganges descended on the earth after severe penance of King Bhagirathi. The Gangotri Temple was built by the Gurkha general Amar Singh Thapa in early 18th century. The Holy Ganges originates from Gaumukh which is accessible after 19 Kms trek from Gangotri. During winters temple remain inaccessible due to heavy snowfall so statue of Goddess Ganges is brought down to Mukhba Gram, a small village in Harsil which lies on the way to the Gangotri Shrine.
Gaumukh: – Gau Mukh is made with two words which means Mouth of Cow, in the other terms it means the holy river Ganges originates from mouth of Cow, as we already know that cow is a holy animal in Hindu religion. The river Ganges originates from Gaumukh Glacier which is about 18-19 Kms from Gangotri Dham, which takes about 1-2 Days to reach Gaumukh. You can also visit Tapovan which is meadows like form near the Gaumukh.
